In a call with investors for the most recent financial quarter, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto said that in the era of IP, Nintendo has to consider ways to grow the Nintendo brand beyond the hardware race with Sony and Microsoft. During a Q&A with investors to discuss Nintendo’s Q3 2020 performance, Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto was asked about Nintendo’s plan to develop its intellectual property (IP) and how Nintendo will increase its reach in a competitive “IP-based content industry.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=2020-platform-exclusives&captions=true"] Miyamoto agreed with the IP-focused nature of the industry saying, “Nintendo has long been thought of as part of a race to produce the video game hardware. Lately, I feel like that conversation about competition between Nintendo and other game companies is happening less and less.” Miyamoto reaffirmed that “Only Nintendo developers can use the character of Mario as we feel best… and we have closely guarded our rights so that we don’t lose that freedom in developing our games.” But Miyamoto also discussed the benefits of expanding into other mediums like theme parks, animated movies, and mobile phones. “[T]here is a limit to how many consumers will be able to engage with Mario if their contact point is limited to dedicated video game systems,” said Miyamoto. “That recognition is highly valued by us, and we will continue to grow the number of people who come in contact with our Nintendo characters as we continue working on our unique initiatives.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=igns-top-25-nintendo-switch-games&captions=true"] Miyamoto’s comments about being less in a console hardware race, and more in an IP-focused competition echoes remarks made by Xbox boss Phil Spencer who said that Amazon and Google were Microsoft’s biggest competition in gaming, not Sony and Nintendo. Spencer was referring to Microsoft’s cloud business, which is directly competing with Amazon and Google’s cloud technologies. This technology also powers Google and Microsoft’s video game streaming service — Stadia and xCloud respectively. Nintendo doesn’t have a cloud business, though reports say the company could work with Microsoft for future streaming services. While Miyamoto talks about the importance of Nintendo's unique approach to game development and hardware, he seems to be acknowledging a limit to how big Nintendo's brand can get through systems alone. Nintendo has spent the past few years expanding into the smartphone space partnering with studios like DeNA and Cy Games to create hit mobile games like Fire Emblem: Heroes and Dragalia Lost. In an era of increasing competition from new technologies and consolidation of IP, it appears that both Nintendo and Microsoft are looking beyond the console wars that defined previous gaming generations. The script for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will reportedly be rewritten by the showrunner for Loki. Michael Waldron has been hired to work on the script that was previously written by Jade Bartlett, according to THR. Sam Raimi is said to be in talks to direct the film, which is slated for May 7, 2021. In November 2019, Kevin Feige said the Loki series will tie directly into Doctor Strange 2. Waldron recently served as a producer on Rick and Morty for its fourth season and wrote the episode "The Old Man and the Seat" as well as worked on the fifth season of the NBC-Hulu series Community. He's following in the footsteps of his Rick & Morty and Community colleague Dan Harmon, who was brought in to rewrite the first Doctor Strange. Ryan and Andy Tohill, the directors of the 2018 thriller The Dig, have been hired for a reboot of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. The Tohills will direct the film from a script by Fede Alvarez and Rodolfo Sayagues, the writers of the 2013 Evil Dead reboot and Don't Breathe. Alvarez expressed his enthusiasm for the Tohills in a statement to Variety. “The Tohill’s vision is exactly what the fans want,” Alvarez said. “It’s violent, exciting and so depraved that it will stay with you forever.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/10/28/the-10-best-horror-movies"] Variety reports that Legendary Pictures acquired the rights to the Texas Chainsaw franchise around autumn 2019. Alvarez and Sayagues were signing a deal to produce movies for Legendary through their own production company at that time, and the Texas Chainsaw reboot was announced as one of their projects. Chris Thomas Devlin was said to be writing the script, according to Deadline. It was first reported by Bloody Disgusting in August 2018 that Legendary Pictures was vying for the rights to the franchise. That report said that Legendary wanted to develop a TV series and reboot the film franchise. The Tohills may have only directed one movie before, but Ryan Tohill has a recent history in Hollywood. Ryan Tohill's IMDb credits him on various TV and movie prop teams including Game of Thrones, Krypton and Philomena. It was released on DirecTV a month before a limited theatrical release that grossed less than $1 million worldwide, according to The Numbers. In our review of Leatherface, we said it was "the worst Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie ever." This reboot will be the ninth Texas Chainsaw movie to be released in theaters. King, the Activision-owned developer responsible for such mobile titles as Candy Crush, appears to be gearing up to release a Crash Bandicoot endless runner. As reported by Eurogamer, @JumpButtonCB and @Motwera on Twitter uncovered a listing, that has since been removed, for this Crash Bandicoot mobile title that will allow players to "Run, Jump and Slide" and "Build & Grow Your Base." The artwork allegedly leaked from Brazilian Facebook ads and shows a game that is very similar to 2011's mobile hit Temple Run, albeit with Crash's iconic bop crates and wumpa fruit. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/06/29/crash-bandicoot-n-sane-trilogy-review"] Kotaku grabbed a screenshot of this new game's description, before it was removed, from an app store testing company called Storemaven, and it states players will team up with Coco and Aku Aku to defeat Dr. Cortex. The game's story description is as follows; "Dr. Neo Cortex dispatched mutagen henchmen across the multiverse to enslave all dimensions. With the help of his spirited sister Coco, Crash must strike and base Cortex's minions back to their own worlds!" This would be the third recent Crash Bandicoot game following 2017's N. Sane Trilogy and 2019's Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. Crash Team Racing also won our Best Racing Game of 2019. Alongside those, Call of Duty: Mobile had the largest mobile game launch in history, so it makes sense to see Activision continue trying to tap into the mobile market with its most popular franchises. The next major phase in Marvel Comics' X-Men relaunch is on the horizon, and it all starts on Free Comic Book Day 2020. Marvel just revealed two new titles being offered for this year's FCBD event - Free Comic Book Day 2020: X-Men #1 and Free Comic Book Day 2020: Spider-Man/Venom #1. Both books will offer a taste of things to come this summer as Marvel prepares for major storylines involving the X-Men and Spider-Man families. (Image Credit: Marvel Comics)[/caption] FCBD 2020: X-Men #1 features a lead story reuniting House of X writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Pepe Larraz. Marvel's press release teases this story "will lead into a game-changing summer for all of X." House of X and sister series Powers of X recently introduced sweeping changes for the X-Men franchise, paving the way for a line-wide relaunch dubbed "Dawn of X." The various new X-Men books have been exploring this new status quo and the challenges facing Professor Xavier's new mutant nation of Krakoa. This FCBD issue looks to be the start of the next major phase of Hickman's multi-year plan for the franchise. We don't yet know what that involves, but it could mean a brand new wave of X-Men comics all building out of a major instigating event. War between humanity and mutantkind, perhaps? Will the futuristic Sentinel Nimrod be born in Moira MacTaggert's tenth life cycle? Will Mister Sinister betray the mutants of Krakoa once more? Anything is possible in this new X-Men era. For now, all we know is the cover teases a story featuring veteran X-Men Magik, Storm, Rogue, Nightcrawler and Wolverine. Marvel also revealed this issue will feature a second story from writer Tom Taylor (DCeased) and artist Iban Coello (Venom) that acts as a prelude to another upcoming X-book. Last year's FCBD 2019: Spider-Man #1 acted as a prologue for the Absolute Carnage crossover, and we wouldn't be surprised if this issue sets the stage for a followup, as the symbiote god Knull makes his way closer to Earth. Absolute Carnage writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman will handle the first story, with Black Cat writer Jed MacKay and Amazing Spider-Man artist Patrick Gleason handling the second story. DC will release Generation Zero, which features the Wally West Flash becoming the new Doctor Manhattan. These books, along with numerous other FCBD releases from a variety of publishers, will be made available on Saturday, May 2. This isn't the only new X-book in the works at Marvel. Activision says that players can expect many more remasters and “reimagined experiences” from in 2020 after the success of revived franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. During the Q4 FY2019 investor call earlier this week, Activision Blizzard CFO Dennis Durkin revealed that in addition to new games and IP, Activision “will continue to tap into our portfolio of beloved IP to bring several remastered and reimagined experiences to our players in 2020, which we’ll announce closer to launch.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-call-of-duty-review&captions=true"] Activision already released several successful remasters including the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited. In terms of “reimaginings,” players can look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare which was a soft reboot of Infinity Ward’s 2007 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Activision has a library of dormant IPs like Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. Thre are also several Blizzard titles that could be remastered including Diablo. Though the recent Warcraft 3: Reforged remaster has been met with criticism from the community. Netflix has announced a release date for the second season of its adult-animated comedy, Paradise PD, which will premiere on Friday, March 6, 2020. Per Netflix, in Season 2, "the diabolical Kingpin tightens his grip on Paradise as the squad contends with bitter feuds, dirty schemes, kinky fetishes, and a nuclear threat." The streaming giant has also released a clip featuring guest star Lance Reddick (The Wire, Fringe) as Agent Clappers. The unstoppable Juggernaut is about to barrel his way into Marvel’s line of X-Men comics with a brand new five-issue mini-series from writer Fabian Nicieza and artist Ron Garney. The story will not only bring Cain Marko back into the fold and explain where he’s been, but show how, despite having a long history with the X-Men, he’s not welcome on the new mutant-only nation of Krakoa because, technically, he’s a human empowered by mystical forces. “That basically instigates the entire story. Having been X and lost, what does Cain become now? After years of back and forth and madness and sadness, he had become a member in good standing of the X-Men, and then while he's away dancing in Limbo, mutantkind gets everything they could have ever hoped for... and Cain can't be a part of that,” Nicieza told IGN over an email interview. “How he reacts to that rejection becomes the exploration of who he is going to become without the one thing that -- for good and bad -- has defined him for most of his life.” [caption id="attachment_2298941" align="aligncenter" width="720"] Juggernaut #1 cover by Geoff Shaw. And as her name implies, she has decelerating powers. Her gift just so happens to run counter to the Juggernaut’s ability to become unstoppable once in motion. “She'll adamantly tell you she's not a mutant, and her personal life is a mystery because she wants it to be,” Nicieza said of the new character. “She's a fifteen year-old kid living with other homeless squatters in Manhattan buildings that were abandoned after the War of the Realms. After she meets Cain in issue #1, she becomes the catalyst towards helping him see a purpose to his new life, and if it gets her more views on her RoxTube channel, that's just a bonus. I wanted a bit of an ‘Arya and the Hound’ dynamic to their relationship, and she appears at his side for the whole series. I like her, even though she's one of those adorably annoying types with their cell phones always in your face looking for real-time validation for themselves and for you.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=20-most-anticipated-comics-of-2020&captions=true"] And along with his new friend comes a new look for the Juggernaut armor, designed by Nicieza and spruced up by Garney. “I wanted a redesign that combined the Kirby power and the skewed oddity that Ditko brought to magical concepts, since Juggernaut is an offspring of both,” Nicieza explained. “I wanted some crimson to peek through the armor plating to connote the inner power that is now very much a part of Cain. I also wanted a ‘segmented’ look to the armor, so there is a bit of a visual 'armoring up process' that looks great and makes better toys!” Though he started as a straight-up villain, Juggernaut has changed his moral alignment from card-carrying member of the X-Men and back again. This series will show where he now stands and how he finds his new purpose in the Marvel Universe. “The acquisition of a new armor goes a long way towards exploring how much power means to Cain, and whether he can do something worthwhile with that power in the present day,” Nicieza said.
