American Psycho at 20: “It’s Not Easy to Do an Ax Murder”

SPOILERS AHEAD for American Psycho! [poilib element="accentDivider"] It's been 20 years since Christian Bale killed Jared Leto with an axe -- that is, it's been two decades since the serial killer satire American Psycho opened in theaters on April 14, 2000. In honor of that anniversary, director Mary Harron shared her thoughts on one of her movie's most infamous and grisliest scenes: Patrick Bateman's (Bale) murder of his loathed rival, Paul Allen (played by Leto). In the film, based on Bret Easton Ellis's controversial novel, Wall Street investment banker Patrick Bateman turns serial killer. Although viewers had already seen Bateman kill a homeless man and a dog, the scene where Bateman brings home his drunk co-worker Paul Allen, gives him a lecture on the Huey Lewis and the News song "Hip to Be Square," and then hacks him to death with an axe is the movie's first real showcase of Bateman's utter depravity and obsessive dedication to his, um, craft. And as Harron tells it, Jared Leto never saw it coming. That shocked reaction from Leto seen in the movie was genuine. [ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/07/04/american-psycho-whats-the-difference] “We decided to shoot the rehearsal of the actual murder without telling Jared,” Harron told Entertainment Weekly. "Christian held back his performance until then so that it would be a real surprise. When he screams 'Hey Paul' and Jared turns around and sees Christian running towards him with the axe, he looks genuinely shocked." Harron also recounted how arduous the all-night shoot was for the rest of the scene, which saw Bale splattered with blood while Leto lay on the floor awaiting dismemberment. According to the director, “It’s not easy to do an ax murder.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-most-controversial-horror-movies&captions=true"] For more on Jared Leto being shocked by things, you must read how Leto found out about the coronavirus.

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey to be Temporarily Free

PlayStation will offer Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey for free as part of its Play At Home Initiative that also includes a $10 million creative fund for indie developers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. PlayStation president Jim Ryan revealed the details of the $10 million fund and free games on PlayStation.Blog, but also said more information and participation criteria will revealed at a later date for those developers looking to take advantage of it. "Independent developers are vital to the heart and soul of the gaming community and we understand the hardships and financial struggles that many smaller gaming studios are facing." Ryan said. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2015/09/30/uncharted-the-nathan-drake-collection-review"] As far as the games, Journey and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection will be free to all PS4 customers, not just those with PlayStation Plus, from April 15 - May 5 to "help keep the PlayStation community entertained at home." Its important to note that, once you redeem the games, they are yours to keep forever. For those in China and Germany, Sony will be offering Knack 2 instead of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. "During these days of physical distancing, fans have turned to gaming for moments of respite and enjoyment." Ryan explained. "At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we are privileged to bring this much-needed entertainment. We know this is just one small step and we are thankful to be able to offer this support to our players, our communities, and our partners." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2012/12/19/igns-best-ps3-game-of-2012-journey"] Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection was released in 2015 and includes the first three Uncharted titles. In our review, we said "Missing bells and whistles aside, these three exemplary games have never looked or played better than they do here, so whether you’ve played them before or not, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection should be in your library." Journey was released in 2012 and won IGN's Game of the Year for that year, as well. In our review, we said "Journey celebrates the poignancy of nature, it startles you with the unexpected, and empowers you in an exhilarating, unforgettable conclusion. The hours spent completing Journey will create memories that last for years. Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Watch Aerith Voice Actor Hear Herself For the First Time

Final Fantasy 7 Remake has fans of the original 1997 game around the world reliving some of their favorite moments in Square Enix's modern take on the game, including the game's cast. Some have weeped hearing Tifa's iconic theme for the first time. Others are rejoicing over the weirdness of the original retained in this remake. One person, though, was brought to tears hearing her own voice in the game for the first time as one of the game's main characters, Aerith Gainsborough. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ign.com%2Fslideshows%2Fevery-ign-final-fantasy-game-review&captions=true"] Briana White, who provides Aerith's English voice, is also a YouTuber and Twitch streamer. While recording her play through she reached the point in the remake where Cloud meets Aerith for the first time, and was immediately brought to tears. Just like the rest of us, then. You can check out the special moment below, but if you haven't started the game yet, there are spoilers in the video for the game's earlier hours. As you can see, White isn't quite sure where to go before she realizes where she's at in Midgar and which scene she's about to reach. After the scene begins, White begins to cry after hearing the first bit of her VO work for Aerith, which isn't even words — just panicked shrieks. As the scene continues, Aerith actually says words causing the tears to start up again. She laughs at Aerith's remarks to Cloud's too-cool-for-you attitude as well. Yeah, we laughed and cried too, Briana, you're not alone. Not that we voiced any of the characters or anything. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/04/09/the-journey-to-final-fantasy-7-remake"] For more, check out our guide to the cast of Final Fantasy 7 Remake to see who voices characters alongside White. After that, read about the cast's thoughts on living up to fan expectations surrounding the game, and if you're playing yourself, be sure to read up on our battle system guide and combat tips.
