Universal Orlando Targets Early June Reopening

UPDATE 2: Universal Orlando is reportedly aiming to reopen for business June 5. The Hollywood Reporter says plans for the targeted reopening have been filed with the city government. "Universal Studios will open June 1 just for employees as a dry run of sorts and then on June 3, some invited guests would visit. Then the park would open to the public on June 5, officials said," according to THR. "The CityWalk district within the Florida resort reopened earlier this month with strict new measures in place such as a mask and temperature check requirement." There's no word yet on when Universal Studios Hollywood will reopen. UPDATE: Universal announced Thursday that they have extended the closure of Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood, including the theme parks and Universal CityWalk at both destinations, at least through May 31 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company also announced that some staff will have their reduced to 80% while other employees will be furloughed as Universal continues to monitor the ongoing crisis. Our original report from March 24 follows. [poilib element="accentDivider"] The company also announced that they will be asking some employees to take a 20% pay cut while furloughing others as they continue to monitor developments in the ongoing crisis. Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood will remain closed beyond the original March 28 reopening date that Universal announced March 12. "We are extending the closure of Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood through April 19 as we continue to respond to current conditions and make the health and safety of team members and guests our top priority," Universal said in a statement posted Tuesday. "This includes our theme parks and Universal CityWalk at both destinations. The Universal Orlando Resort hotels have also temporarily suspended operations. We will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments as needed, based on guidance from health agencies and government officials." Our original report follows. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Universal has shut down operations at the Universal Studios theme park, with current plans to reopen as of March 28 at this time. Variety reports that in response to and in order to help contain the spread of novel coronavirus COVID-19, Universal will be closed starting March 14. “The health and safety of our team members and guests is always our top priority,” Universal Studios spokesperson told Variety. “Out of an abundance of caution and in response to the guidance provided by the California Department of Public Health, Universal Studios Hollywood will temporarily close beginning Saturday, March 14. The theme park anticipates reopening on March 28 as we continue to monitor the situation." Universal CityWalk, however, will remain open. Universal joins Disneyland and Disney California Adventure in closing in response to efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19. Those two parks, however, are closed indefinitely as of this time. News of Disney World's closure has yet to be announced, and that park is operating normally as of press time. The film world has also seen several changes due to efforts to contain COVID-19. Universal Pictures earlier announced nearly a year's delay for the release date of Fast 9. And Disney has delayed the releases of Mulan, as well as pushed the release dates for New Mutants and Antlers. IGN spoke with a number of medical experts to learn how movie delays may help stop the spread of COVID-19. Events like E3 2020 and SXSW that bring large amounts of people together have closed as well.

Tenet: New Trailer Premieres Tonight on Fortnite

Update: Donald Mustard, worldwide creative director at Epic Games, confirmed that the idea for premiering the new Tenet trailer in Fortnite came from a call with director Christopher Nolan himself. According to Mustard, Epic told Nolan that it was sad they couldn't watch the new trailer on the big screen, but suggested that Fortnite's virtual big screens could be the "next best thing." Original story follows. [poilib element="accentDivider"] For anyone excited for Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated new movie, Tenet, you will be able to watch the brand new trailer on Fortnite starting tonight. In the latest collaboration with Epic Games’ popular battle royale shooter, Warner Bros. is premiering the brand new Tenet trailer on Fortnite’s virtual big screens. The new Tenet trailer will premiere at the top of every hour starting at 5 pm PT/8 pm ET tonight, May 21. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/19/tenet-official-trailer"] The first trailer for Tenet was released in December, but while the first trailer showed off a mysterious time-reversal power of some sort, it’s hard to fully grasp the true plot of the film. The official synopsis simply states that an agent must prevent World War III. This isn’t the first time Fortnite premiered new footage for an upcoming movie. Star Wars premiered exclusive trailers and events in Fortnite before. Even the nascent streaming service Quibi premiered shows directly on Fortnite. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-delayed-movie-due-to-coronavirus-so-far&captions=true"] Tenet is still scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 17. Whether it will be able to during the COVID-19 pandemic remains to be seen. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt Kim is a reporter for IGN.

Arrowverse Architect Scripting Spidey Spin-Off Jackpot

Marc Guggenheim, one of the architects of The CW's Arrowverse, will script Jackpot for Sony Pictures based on the Marvel Comics title, according to Deadline. The project falls under the banner of the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, the all-encompassing handle for Sony's Marvel filmography from the old Tobey Maguire Spidey films to Morbius and Venom. Before he became the maestro of DC Comics on television, Guggenheim was a Marvel Comics writer who worked on the "Brand New Day" storyline that the character of Jackpot came from. jackpot-cover1Jackpot followed scientist Sara Ehret who gains superpowers through a virus that altered her DNA. Boasting super strength, she becomes a crime-fighting mom who had to balance the duties of both family and superheroism. Ehret briefly handed the mantle of Jackpot over to the ill-fated Alana Jobson before returning to the role. Fans had long speculated that Jackpot, who sported long red hair and used the expression "Tiger," was actually Peter Parker's beloved Mary Jane Watson but that did not turn out to be the case. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-spider-man-movie-spin-off-in-development&captions=true"] Jackpot isn't the only comic book movie Marc Guggenheim is currently working on. He's also writing the feature film adaptation of Rob Liefeld's Prophet and is adapting the graphic novel Gantz for Sony. Other Spidey spin-offs in development include Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web, the latter of which will reportedly be directed by Jessica Jones' S.J. Clarkson.

Ghost of Tsushima Director Discusses Challenging Combat

Ghost of Tsushima's recent State of Play showcase offered a brief look at how combat will work in the upcoming open-world PS4 adventure from Sucker Punch, but some new details have revealed just how challenging the combat is meant to be. Speaking with IGN Nordic, Ghost of Tsushima Game Director Nate Fox explained how Jin, though a trained and skilled samurai, can be felled by a few hits — players won't just be able to go swords blazing into an encampment and take out a dozen foes. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/18-minutes-of-ghosts-of-tsushima-gameplay-full-4k-60fps-presentation"] "We are trying to make a grounded game in that sense, so a couple blows from the enemy will kill you," Fox said. "The game is very challenging. We have three words to describe the combat: Mud, blood and steel. We absolutely honor the lethality of the sword. We watched samurai movies and people go down with one or two strikes, and that is embedded inside of the combat. Beating the Mongols in battle will be hard, but it’s that challenge that makes it feel alive and the victory rewarding. You can’t just run into a camp and fight 5 people at the same time, you will get overwhelmed and die." The State of Play showcase showed some expert play — when IGN spoke to Creative Director and Art Director Jason Connell about Ghost of Tsushima, he echoed that sentiment of players needing to employ all of Jin's techniques, including those he acquires while donning the identity of the titular Ghost. "There can be a lot of [enemies] around you and you'll have to start using some of those Ghost tactics to start augmenting your play style because otherwise, seven or eight guys around you might be too much for a samurai to handle," Connell told us. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=ghost-of-tsushima-ps4-4k-screenshots&captions=true"] For those looking for extra challenge, though, they can turn to what Fox described as duels against other expert fighters. "One thing we didn’t show at State of Play which I wish we had, was that the game features duels against other expert swordsman. This is classic samurai stuff. Those fights are incredibly difficult and they’re driven from personality and get solved in the most cinematic way possible, which is also true to fantasy. You need to study your opponent and understand how they attack in order to win," he explained. We also have an answer to a lingering question from the State of Play showcase's combat section — namely, what exactly the HUD meant for Tsushima's gameplay. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/ghost-of-tsushima-combat-and-stealth-gameplay"] "So the red bar is health. The golden spheres are Jin's resolve. He uses these to regain a little bit of health. Also, it's his grit to perform his most devastating attacks. These attacks drain him a little bit, [so] you have to make a tactical decision if you'd rather heal or really bring the fight," Fox told Gamespot. While we haven't had a chance to go hands-on with Ghost of Tsushima just yet, we did learn plenty of more about it following the State of Play, including the decision by Sucker Punch to move away from Infamous' karma meter for Jin's story, what Ghost of Tsushima being Sucker Punch's biggest game means, and how the black-and-white film grain mode positively impacted development. Ghost of Tsushima is currently set for a July 17 release date. Gran Turismo 7 Not Officially Confirmed, Company Shared Fake GT 7 Logo

Next Level Racing, a company specializing in making racing simulator cockpits, posted a photo on its official Instagram account yesterday asking fans which racing game they’re most looking forward to in 2020. Next Level Racing used logos for upcoming games like Automobalista 2, F1 2020, Dirt 5, and a logo that looked like Gran Turismo 7. Only there’s no Gran Turismo 7 announced. After publishing the photo and kicking off speculation that a new Gran Turismo game was coming in 2020, Next Level Racing deleted the image and issued a statement claiming they do not know of any new Gran Turismo game, and that the company used a mock-up logo found online. Next Level Racing also blamed the media for creating unnecessary speculation about a new game. [caption id="attachment_235515" align="alignnone" width="928"]gt7_insta Gran Turismo 7 logo in now-deleted Instagram post. (via WCCFTech)[/caption] “Our team has recognized that a recent post by us using a logo has been misinterpreted by media and it does not reflect any information from our end, and we deny knowing any information regarding the launch of [Grand Turismo 7],” Next Level Racing said in a statement. “There have been assumptions made in the media that are quite simply untrue. Due to this, we have decided to take down our previous social post.” Next Level also added at the end, “Our Graphic Design Department used the mock logo that is circulated on the internet.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/07/02/the-evolution-of-gran-turismo"] IGN reached out to Sony regarding the appearance of the Gran Turismo 7 logo but have not heard back in time for publication of this story. Whether the media is at fault for Gran Turismo 7 rumors is another matter. Although internet rumors are a part of the news cycle, it doesn’t help if a company publishes a mock logo for a game that hasn’t been announced alongside very real logos of games that have been announced. This could create unnecessary assumptions. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt Kim is a reporter for IGN.
