NASA, SpaceX Launch Marks New Era for Space Exploration

SpaceX will launch its first flight into space with humans aboard on Wednesday, May 27, with astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on the Crew Dragon spacecraft. The crew is headed to the International Space Station (ISS), and if they're successful, this will mark the first-ever privately owned company to send humans into space while meeting NASA's certification requirements. Update: The NASA and SpaceX launch has been delayed due to weather. The new launch date is Saturday, May 30 at 3:22pm ET/ 19:22pm UTC.  Elon Musk's company designed the spacecraft, which is planned to launch on May 27 at 4:33pm ET/1:33pm PT. National Geographic will live stream the entire event, beginning at 3:00pm ET/12:00pm PT. "Launch America: Mission to Space Live" on its Nat Geo Channel, which will have updates about any changes to the launch time. The launch is also streamed online on NASA's YouTube channel. IGN spoke with retired astronaut Cady Coleman, who logged 180 days in space, and trained Sandra Bullock for her role in the Oscar-winning film, Gravity, on this momentous event and how privatized space launches could help bring more opportunities to American astronauts in the future. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=nasa-black-hole-gallery&captions=true"]

"People are meant to explore. Our earth is part of a much bigger place, and that’s kind of this big statement, but it’s really true. And in order to explore you have to go there," Coleman said. "We’ve had a space station in orbit for almost 20 years, and we are testing things out in that space station and we’ve been going back and forth with the Russians for the past nine years, and now we have the added capability of being able to launch from the U.S."

NASA's Opportunities with SpaceX and Boeing

“I think NASA has taken a new look at ‘How can we do this and how can we do this efficiently’ and looking at commercial companies like SpaceX and Boeing, we can say, ‘This is what we need.’ And they get to use their ingenuity and their ideas to design. So you don’t just have this thinking from the government of ‘This is the way we’ve always done it,'" Coleman said.

A major difference of private companies such as SpaceX or Boeing creating the spacecrafts has to do with risks – Coleman explained the commercial companies are able to take further hardware risks than NASA is able to.

"If they [SpaceX/Boeing] test something out and it doesn't work out, they can go, 'Okay we learned something,' but if NASA or the government has a big test, and if it doesn't work out, then we have an investigation, rightly so, and they’re using tax dollars. So in this case, SpaceX and Boeing can do all of the trying out of things that they want to. They're still signed up to deliver a vehicle to us that works a certain way, but they’re taking bigger risks than we can, and by them taking bigger risks, everybody gets further ahead," Coleman said.

Coleman added the distinction of the involvement of risks, saying, "No one can take risks with humans that aren’t appropriate. Space travel is never safe, but we have to try and make it as safe as we can."

The Future of Americans in Space

In terms of SpaceX being the first commercial company for the launch, Coleman said they and Boeing both bring really valuable approaches for the future. "Both of them bring such increased capability that we are going to be able to launch more easily. From the U.S. we have more control about timing, about what's going on and how, and that's going to lead to basically more data points, of what kinds of things can we do up in space." Although SpaceX is the first private company to mark this historical event, Coleman said she believed Boeing was actually expected to be the first launch of the two, but ran into some problems and had to delay. Coleman shared that even though the launch on Wednesday has a two-person crew that is made up of both males, that is not representative of where NASA and the commercial companies are at in terms of equality. "We have a crew of a group of about eight astronauts that are a part of this commercial crew group, and are made up of both women and men, but when only two people go and they both happen to be guys, in a field that has been traditionally male-dominated, I think it's really easy to create an impression that women and minorities are not a part of this program, and that is a completely incorrect impression." The chief pilot for Boeing's first mission is a woman pilot, Nicole Mann.

Bringing the 'Magic' of Space to Film

Coleman was in space on the ISS when she and Sandra Bullock got in contact with one another for Bullocks role in 2013's Gravity, with Coleman saying the experience became a great morale booster for the entire crew while up there. "The two things that she wanted to understand was, how does it feel to be a human being living so far from everyone that you care about, and not knowing when on Earth you're going to come home," Coleman said. "And the other thing, was a more physical thing, she wanted to understand what it was like to move up in space." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2014/01/10/the-best-movie-of-2013-gravity-igns-best-of-2013"] Coleman said that moving in space isn't as much about, "floating around, grabbing handrails and pulling yourself along and giving yourself a shove, it's just this magic flying." National Geographic will continue the live coverage on Thursday, May 28 as the Crew Dragon spacecraft is expected to dock at the ISS. More space content can be streamed on Disney+ leading up to and after the event, including, Apollo: Missions to the Moon, One Strange Rock, Mars: Inside SpaceX, and Mission to the Sun. Stay tuned to IGN for a follow-up to the SpaceX launch and in the meantime, for more space news, read about the closest black hole to earth that has recently been discovered and how one black hole appeared to break the law of physics itself. Mondo’s The Invisible Man Limited Edition Poster Revealed

Director Leigh Whannell and Blumhouse Productions' rethinking of The Invisible Man proved to be a hit when it was released in February, despite the COVID-19 pandemic forcing theaters to close shortly after it opened. Regardless, the Elisabeth Moss vehicle injected new life into the age-old story, and now Mondo, those purveyors of fine posters and memorabilia, are releasing a limited edition print timed to the film's release on 4k Ultra HD, Blu-ray and Digital this week. Created by Mondo artist Francesco Francavilla, there are two versions of the poster -- the regular version and the variant. The piece is a subtle nod to Francavilla's previous Invisible Man poster for the classic Universal Monsters film that Mondo released back in 2012. Diablo 4: What We Know So Far

Diablo 4 was officially announced at BlizzCon 2019. While rumors of the title circulated for some time, Blizzard finally revealed it's working on the next Diablo entry and has since given us some details that give us an idea of what to expect. From gameplay to enemies and potential characters, here is what we know about Diablo 4 so far.

Does Diablo 4 Have a Release Date?

Blizzard has not announced a Diablo 4 release date yet. After confirming the sequel at Blizzcon 2019, game director Luis Barriga said Diablo 4 wouldn't be released soon. "A game of this scope takes time," Barriga said. "This is a very, very early first step. We're not coming out soon... not even Blizzard soon." It was revealed Diablo 4 is being developed for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

Diablo 4 Gameplay

Set in Sanctuary, a dimension separate from heaven and hell, Diablo 4 will focus on the darker roots of the franchise. Barriga described it as gothic, medieval, and "a bleak and shattered hellscape bereft of hope and beset by demons." Diablo 4 will feature a non-linear campaign played in a shared open world where players can group up, trade, or participate in PVP in designated areas. The world will include five regions that run on a day/night cycle and have weather effects. Barriga emphasized the importance of the series' legacy in Diablo 4, saying it's inspired by the combat in Diablo 3, the class line up and loot chase in Diablo 2, and the sense of dread in Diablo 1. IGN's James Duggan went hands-on with a 20 minute Diablo 4 demo at Blizzcon 2019, and you can see his detailed breakdown of the demo in the video below. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/11/02/diablo-4-hands-on-gameplay-impressions-blizzcon-2019"]

Diablo 4 Classes

Three classes are confirmed for Diablo 4: Barbarian, Sorceress, and Druid. Two additional classes which have not been revealed will also be available once Diablo 4 launches. Here are Blizzard's descriptions of the confirmed Diablo 4 classes so far:
  • Barbarian: Known for their unparalleled strength and brutal melee combat." Barbarians will have a unique ability known as Arsenal, which allows them to carry four different weapons at a time.
  • Sorceress: Hearkens back to their Diablo II roots and shapes the elements to obliterate their foes by impaling them upon jagged spikes of ice, electrocuting them with bolts of lightning, or raining flaming meteors from the sky.
  • Druid: Is a savage shapeshifter whose updated playstyle empowers them to fluidly transform between werewolf, werebear, and human form to unleash the raw power of nature’s fury on the forces of the Burning Hells.
Each class will have its own talent and skill trees and are capable of detailed customization options.

Diablo 4 Characters

In panels and in a Diablo 4 quarterly update, some monster families were revealed. So far, Blizzard confirmed enemy groups The Cannibals, Cultist, Drowned, and Fallen will be present in Diablo 4. Each monster family will have archetypes with various fighting styles that play different roles in combat. For example, the Drowned family includes archetypes such as Ranged, Melee, Bruiser, Swarmer, and Dungeon Boss. While Swarmers strike in groups, Bruisers take on a tank-like role as large monsters with high health, making each encounter slightly different. An excerpt in a Diablo art book leak suggests Lillith will be a returning character in Diablo 4. Originally featured in Diablo 2's Pandemonium event, the passage in the leaked page reads, "Lilith's debut in Diablo IV is a reimagining of her form that is far different from her previous appearance."

Will Diablo 4 Have Microtransactions?

At BlizzCon 2019, Twitch streamer Quin69 asked lead designer Joe Shely how Blizzard will monetize Diablo 4. Shely replied, “Diablo 4 will be available as a base game, and… we’re going to have expansions. You also will be able to acquire cosmetics in the game.” This suggests cosmetic microtransactions could be part of Diablo 4 in addition to expansions and seasonal content Shely mentioned earlier in the interview. Walt Disney World Resort Looking to Reopen This July

Walt Disney World Resort in Florida has set out plans to reopen the park beginning July 11. After being closed for months following the lockdown period designed to combat the coronavirus pandemic, Walt Disney World has submitted plans to the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force group for a multi-phase reopening of the park. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/12/disneyland-california-adventure-closing-due-to-coronavirus-concerns"] As revealed by Walt Disney World News Today - and later published to the Disney Parks blog -  the plan begins on July 11, with the opening of Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, and a few days later on July 15 Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot will also reopen. The plan outlines a limited capacity for the park, with visitors having to secure a reservation for the day they wish to attend in advance. The capacity of the park will then incrementally increase as the county furthers its reopening phases. All major attractions within the park will use a virtual queuing system rather than actual lines, organised through the My Disney Experience app. Social distance will need to be maintained between visitors and face masks will be enforced. Temperature checks will also be mandatory to access the parks. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=avengers-campus-concept-art&captions=true"] New signage has been developed to be placed around the park, explaining the new restrictions guests must adhere to. There are also new rules for the cast members who dress as Disney characters in the park, and well as increased cleaning and sanitation duties. The plan does not guarantee a reopening of the park; they have been submitted to the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force, and must be endorsed by the Orange County mayor before being submitted to Florida’s governor for final approval. Only then can Walt Disney World reopen. The closure of Walt Disney World Resort was announced back in March, with the final day of regular business being March 15. It’s unprecedented for a Disney park to be closed for this length of time. This plan goes against the predictions of an analyst who suggested Disney will not open its parks until 2021.
