Marvel’s Avengers Confirmed for PS5, Xbox Series X
Marvel's Avengers is officially coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X when the consoles launch this holiday. Those who purchase the game for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, either physically or digitally, will be able to upgrade to the respective next-gen version free of charge.
Square Enix also announced Avengers will support cross-generation play between PlayStation and Xbox consoles (PS5 owners can play with PS4, Xbox Series X with Xbox One). Players will also be able to transfer saves between current- and next-gen consoles.

The PlayStation 5 version will offer both an enhanced graphics mode and a high framerate mode — the latter "targets 60 FPS with dynamic 4K resolution." Gary Snethen, CTO at developer Crystal Dynamics, noted PS5's ultra-fast SSD will make for "nearly instant" load times in Avengers. "And as Iron Man flies through content-rich levels, higher resolution textures and mesh will stream in instantly, maintaining the highest possible quality all the way to the horizon," he added.
Avengers will also take advantage of the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and resistance triggers, as well as PS5's 3D audio capabilities.
Specific details on the Xbox Series X, Stadia, and PC versions will be revealed "at a later time," according to Snethen.

The announcement comes as Sony has yet to announce an official plan for next-gen upgrades. (Microsoft has established its own policy with Smart Delivery.) In lieu of an official policy, some publishers are taking it upon themselves to offer those upgrades for free, including CD Projekt Red with Cyberpunk 2077, EA with FIFA and Madden 21, and now Square with Avengers.
Marvel's Avengers will first be released September 4 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC. Additional info will be revealed on June 24 during an Avengers-focused livestream.

Watch the First Trailer For Apple TV’s Adaptation of Foundation
At WWDC 2020, Apple TV+ revealed the first trailer for its upcoming adaptation of Foundation, based on the novels written by Isaac Asimov. Debuting on the streamer in 2021, Foundation features Jared Harris as Hari Seldon, Lee Pace as Brother Day, and Lou Llobell as Gaal.
For the first look at Foundation, check out the official teaser trailer below or at the top of the page:
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/22/foundation-official-teaser-trailer-2021-jared-harris-lee-pace"]
The Foundation teaser trailer also includes an introduction from executive producer David S. Goyer (co-writer of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight), who offers some insight into why Asimov's stories have inspired popular movies like Star Wars for decades.
"People have been trying to make Foundation for over fifty years," Goyer explained. "Foundation was an enormous influence for Star Wars. It was the greatest science fiction work of all time. The story is sprawling, it unfolds over the course of a thousand years. If ever there were a company that was hoping to better people's lives through technology, through connectivity... it's Apple. And that's something very much that Asimov was hoping to do."
Per Apple, "Foundation chronicles a band of exiles on their monumental journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire."

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run Is Now a Digital-Only Release
The upcoming SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is foregoing its planned theatrical release and heading straight to digital rental services and will be available to stream exclusively on CBS All Access in early 2021. Sponge on the Run is SpongeBob's third full-length feature film and will be his first-ever all CGI film.
Originally reported by Variety, this change in the release is unsurprising given the current landscape of delayed releases as movie theaters nationwide begin preparing to reopen amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Sponge on the Run was initially set to debut on May 22nd before it was delayed to its current release date of August 7th.

Regarding the exclusive launch on CBS All Access in 2021, ViacomCBS Digital's CEO Marc DeBevoise said in a statement, “We are thrilled to have 'The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run,' a premier, first-run movie from one of ViacomCBS’ biggest brands, join CBS All Access’ expanding slate of franchise content from across ViacomCBS. This launch will be perfectly timed with our continued expansion and planned rebranding of the service in early 2021, as we welcome SpongeBob and the gang from Bikini Bottom to the service in the biggest way possible.”
CBS All-Access will undergo a rebranding early next year to highlight more of its family of networks' content including that of Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, and more. The streaming service will also include every season of SpongeBob SquarePants.

This is just one more addition to the list of movies that have skipped their planned theatrical releases this year in lieu of a digital-only release including Trolls World Tour, Artemis Fowl, Scoob!, as well as many others.
While you wait for SpongeBob's next adventure, be sure to check out our review of CBS All Access and how it compares to other streaming services. If you're looking for more F.U.N., you can also hear our thoughts on the upcoming SpongeBob: Battle For Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated game.

Facebook Acquires The Order: 1886 Developer Ready at Dawn
Developer Ready at Dawn (The Order: 1886, Lone Echo) has been acquired by Facebook. The studio will now operate under Facebook's Oculus Studios banner, where it will continue to develop "VR content for gamers."
"Nearly 17 years ago, we embarked on a journey to build a game studio," wrote Ready at Dawn co-founder Ru Weerasuriya on Twitter. "Along the way, we innovated on genres, experiences, games and platforms. Today, we’re excited to join the Facebook family as we open a new chapter in our story and continue to pursue our passions."
[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=lone-echo-screens&captions=true"]
According to an Oculus blog post, Ready at Dawn caught the attention of Facebook with its 2017 VR hit Lone Echo and its "signature zero-g continuous locomotion system and full-body IK (inverse kinematics)," which Oculus says "re-wrote the playbook for VR movement mechanics."
The acquisition is not expected to cause layoffs, according to Facebook, as "the entire Ready At Dawn team will be joining the Oculus Studios team." Facebook also stressed Ready at Dawn will continue to operate independently, "with the full support of Facebook and the Oculus Studios team behind them."
Ready at Dawn is currently developing Lone Echo II, which is expected to be released sometime in 2020.
This is Facebook's third studio acquisition since November: Beat Saber developer Beat Games and Asgard's Wrath developer Sanzaru Games previously joined Oculus Studios.

PS4 Exclusive Ghost of Tsushima Has Gone Gold
Ghost of Tsushima, the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive from developer Sucker Punch, has gone gold a month ahead of its July 17 release date.
"We’re thrilled to announce that Ghost of Tsushima has gone GOLD!" the developer wrote on Twitter. "This is the culmination of years of hard work from our team and we can’t wait to get it into your hands on July 17!"
[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=ghost-of-tsushima-ps4-4k-screenshots&captions=true"]
Ghost of Tsushima is the "biggest game [Sucker Punch has] ever made by a landslide, both in the amount of stuff that's in it and also just sheer landscape, square footage-wise," creative director Jason Connell told IGN. It's the developer's first game since 2014, when it released Infamous: Second Son and its standalone expansion, First Light.
The open-world adventure will be "very challenging" and feature "incredibly difficult" samurai fights, according to game director Nate Fox.
For more, you can read up on all the Ghost of Tsushima gameplay and open world details revealed in last month's State of Play.

YouTube’s Cobra Kai Moving to Netflix for Season 3
Netflix has announced that Cobra Kai Season 3 will debut on the global streaming network instead of YouTube.
While no release date for the third season of Cobra Kai has been revealed, Netflix did confirm that Seasons 1 and 2 will be available on Netflix sometime in 2020. Cobra Kai's departure from YouTube marks the end of the Google-owned company's scripted series run, which featured originals like Origin and Impulse.

"The appeal of The Karate Kid saga is timeless, and Cobra Kai picks up right where it left off without missing a beat," said Brian Wright, VP of Netflix's Original Series. "The rivalry between Daniel and Johnny is one for the ages, and the show has a ton of heart and is a lot of fun. We can’t wait to introduce a new generation of fans to Cobra Kai and are thrilled to be its new home around the world."
If you're in need of a refresher, be sure to check out our full review of Cobra Kai Season 2, which we said, "effectively expands its study of Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence's thirty-year rivalry by shifting some of the focus of the plot to the kids, and how their senseis' squabbles negatively impact them."

The First Macs with Apple Processors Will Arrive By the End of the Year
Rumors that Macs would switch from Intel processors to being powered by Apple’s own silicon have been flying for several years now, but finally, the Cupertino-based company has confirmed it is going to be making the switch.
Apple promises its own silicon will give the mac a whole new level of performance with higher performance at lower power consumption. To show this off, Apple demoed a Mac computer powered by the same A12Z Bionic chip found in the latest iPad running an early version of macOS Big Sur.
What's more, Apple demoed its prototype machine running heavy-duty applications like Adobe Lightroom, where the system quickly auto-toned an image faster than we’ve ever seen on an Intel-powered system. In Photoshop, Apple's chip easily rendered a file with hundreds of layers of seagulls. Lastly, the Apple silicon-equipped Mac also had no trouble smoothly scrubbing through high-resolution footage in Final Cut Pro.
Beyond the raw processing power that Apple’s silicon delivers, these new chips also come with powerful GPUs. During the conference, there was a demo of a Mac running Tomb Raider at Full HD (1080p) resolution at a smooth frame rate that looked close to 60 frames per second. Of course, this demo was also running through a layer of translation from the Intel-based game to play on Apple's new ARM-based architecture, so we're not looking at this new chip's completely raw graphical prowess.
With the Mac switching over to a common architecture shared by all of Apple’s other devices, it should be easier for developers to create software compatible with all of the company’s devices such as the iPhone and iPad.
Apple says it has already made all of its own apps, such as Messages and Photos, compatible with the new architecture. For any third-party applications, Apple has rolled out a new Rosetta 2 to help users transition over to the new hardware.
Anyone familiar with switching over from a PowerPC to Intel Mac may recall Rosetta's somewhat shaky ability to translate apps efficiently, but the Cupertino company says Rosetta 2 offers faster performance and can translate apps the first time you install them.
Apple promises the first systems equipped with its own silicon will arrive by the end of the year. Meanwhile, moving all Mac’s over to Apple’s silicon will be a two-year process.

Microsoft Is Shutting Down Mixer, Will Now Partner With Facebook Gaming
Microsoft has announced that it will be shutting down Mixer, and on July 22 it will redirect all Mixer sites and apps to Facebook Gaming.
The news was announced on Xbox Wire, with Microsoft admitting that "It became clear that the time needed to grow our own livestreaming community to scale was out of measure with the vision and experiences we want to deliver to gamers now."
Microsoft has made the decision to transition all of its streamers to Facebook Gaming, if they so choose, meaning that those who signed exclusive deals, namely Tyler "Ninja" Blevins, Cory "King Gothalion" Michael, and Michael "Shroud" Grzesiek, will be free to return to Twitch or continue on to Facebook Gaming.
King Gothalion has announced he will be joining Facebook Gaming and will begin streaming on Facebook Gaming on June 24, 2020.
While it's yet unclear where Ninja and Shroud will be going, Dexerto's Richard Lewis has said "sources familiar with the deal have informed me that while Facebook did try and negotiate to keep their big partners both Shroud and Ninja opted out. They have received their full payments and as of midnight yesterday were free to engage in talks with other platforms. Game on."
As reported by The Verge, the head of Facebook Gaming said “It’s up to them and their priorities,” meaning Microsoft's new partner isn't "actively pursuing exclusive agreements with any of Mixer’s biggest names."
Existing Mixer Partners will be granted partner status with Facebook Gaming, and streamers using the Mixer monetization program will be able to start using Facebook's Level Up program instantly.
As for Mixer viewers, those with "outstanding Ember balances, channel subscriptions, or Mixer Pro subscriptions will receive Xbox gift card credit."
Microsoft is also stating that Project xCloud was a big factor in this decision and it will "look to debut click-to-play scenarios within the Facebook Gaming and Instagram communities."
The technology that helped build Mixer will continue to impact Microsoft products, as Microsoft Teams will "leverage Mixer’s deep investments in ultra-low latency video streaming, real-time interactivity, and video distribution technology to accelerate our ability to support a variety of video-first, virtual experiences from meetings to live events to other broadcast scenarios."
Speaking to The Verge, Xbox head Phil Spencer described how Mixer was fighting an uphill battle from the start.
“We started pretty far behind, in terms of where Mixer’s monthly active viewers were compared to some of the big players out there,” Spencer, said. “I think the Mixer community is really going to benefit from the broad audience that Facebook has through their properties, and the abilities to reach gamers in a very seamless way through the social platform Facebook has.”
Mixer began as Beam in 2016 before being acquired by Microsoft in the same year. In 2017, it adopted the name Mixer and attempted to make another space for streamers alongside Twitch.
