Umurangi Generation Review – Cyberpunk Snap

In Te Reo (Māori), "umurangi" means red sky--a perpetual sight in this first-person photography game, and a sign of the climate anomaly plaguing the city of Tauranga Aotearoa. You'll see this when raising your camera towards the flock of seagulls gathering at sunset, or a distant view of Mount Mauao amidst the billowing clouds of crimson and orange. Inspired by his personal experiences around the Australian bushfire crisis, Maori developer Naphtali Faulkner envisions a cyberpunk future that's so much more than a neon-soaked dystopia. As a result, Umurangi Generation becomes a shining example of what cyberpunk media should be; it boldly confronts the themes that underpin the genre, from its condemnation of capitalism to rebuking the corporate structures that govern its cities.

Umurangi Generation makes its statements not through dialogue but by letting you explore its themes through the exploratory lens of photography--and its through this framing that the game's message is made all the more resounding. Akin to a bystander, you don't get to interact with the city's inhabitants in Umurangi Generation; you just quietly observe and snap pictures of things you see in your environment.

Rocksteady Announces Suicide Squad Game

Batman: Arkham series developer Rocksteady has announced that it is working on a Suicide Squad video game, and will announce further details on August 22 as part of DC FanDome, DC comics' digital fan event. A Suicide Squad game was first considered a possibility following the end of Batman: Arkham Origins - developed by WB Games Montreal - which featured a post-credits scene in which Deathstroke is asked by Amanda Waller to join the Suicide Squad. In the years since Rocksteady shipped Batman: Arkham Knight, there have been rumours suggesting the studio has been working on a Suicide Squad game, but no official word from the development team or publisher WB Games. Those rumours arose once again last month, with the suggestion that the game's full name may be "Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League", although the poster art featured in the above Tweet just says Suicide Squad. The logo, however, is arranged as a crosshair over Superman's head, so it certainly looks like the Squad have it out for the JL. Now that's a super smash melee I'd like to play out in a video game. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/22/rocksteady-reportedly-working-on-a-suicide-squad-game"] No more details have been revealed as part of the tweet, but we'll likely find out much more at DC FanDome on August 22. WB Games are already known to be showing off things as part of the event, but it's unclear if Suicide Squad is the only game being revealed, or if it's part of a number of announcements from the publisher. Preserved ‘Hell Ant’ Has Been Devouring It’s Prey for 99 Million Years

A prehistoric "hell ant" in the midst of grasping its prey with its unusual mouthparts has been found preserved in 99-million-year-old amber. According to ScienceAlert, the frozen specimen captures the predator "actively feeding" on another insect, which is said to be an extinct relative of the cockroach. It is shown using its scythe-like jaw to pin its prey against the protruding horn-like paddle on the top of its head, acting as sort of a clamp. [caption id="attachment_238985" align="alignnone" width="1610"]Hell Ant Fossil Image credit: Barden et al., Current Biology, 2020[/caption] While the mandibles of modern ants and almost all other living hexapods move on a horizontal axis, this new evidence indicates that hell ants used their lower mandibles to move upwards in a vertical motion as part of their predatory strategy. "Fossilized behavior is exceedingly rare, predation especially so," said Phillip Barden, an assistant professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, who served as the lead author on this new research, which was published in the Current Biology journal. "As palaeontologists, we speculate about the function of ancient adaptations using available evidence, but to see an extinct predator caught in the act of capturing its prey is invaluable." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/30/scientists-revive-100-million-year-old-lifeforms-ign-now"] This newly identified species of prehistoric ant, known as Ceratomyrmex ellenbergeri, is just one of over 12,500 different species of the insect that scientists have discovered to date, though they believe that there's "probably another 10,000 or so" still out there, waiting to be identified in order to join the ranks of this diverse collection of complex creatures. Call of Duty 2020 Reveal Teased For August 10 By Press Kit

Activision has sent a mysterious crate to members of the press, with instructions suggesting that this year's Call of Duty game may be revealed on Monday, August 10. Call of Duty news outlet Charlie Intel posted a picture of the wooden crate to Twitter yesterday. According to the instructions included in the press kit, those receiving the crate have been told not to open the crate "until August 10 at 12PM ET." The specific date and time suggest that this could be when this year's Call of Duty game could be revealed. Charlie Intel mentions in a follow-up tweet that they have been told to send a text to a number on Monday in order to receive a code that will unlock the crate. This tactic of sending out a cryptic press kit to outlets is becoming something of a strategy for Activision - most recently the publisher sent members of the press a puzzle from "Your Favorite Bandicoot" to tease Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-call-of-duty-review&captions=true"] Recently we learned that Call of Duty 2020 will be tightly integrated with Warzone, and that the game is in a playable state, and has been developed by Treyarch and Raven Software. A series of leaks have suggested that this year's Call of Duty will be titled Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. In early July, a Microsoft Store listing for an Activision Shooter called The Red Door was datamined, with sleuths finding strings related to campaign missions, multiplayer maps and even a potential zombies mode.  [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jordan Oloman is a freelance writer for IGN. Trump Looks to Ban TikTok and WeChat, Could Also Affect Games Industry

Update (8/6/20) - White House officials have confirmed to the LA Times that the executive order regarding Tencent and WeChat only blocks transactions related to WeChat. sdf Original story follows. [poilib element="accentDivider"] United States President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that looks to ban both TikTok and WeChat from operating in the USA if they are not sold by their Chinese-owned parent companies, ByteDance and Tencent, respectively. As reported by CNN, the order for TikTok's parent company states that after 45 days, "any transaction by any person, or with respect to any property, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, with ByteDance Ltd." will be prohibited. The order for WeChat's parent company states that after 45 days, "any transaction that is related to WeChat by any person, or with respect to any property, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, with Tencent Holdings Ltd. (a.k.a. Téngxùn Kònggǔ Yǒuxiàn Gōngsī), Shenzhen, China, or any subsidiary of that entity, as identified by the Secretary of Commerce (Secretary) under section 1(c) of this order." While the ByteDance order could impact many around the world if a potential sale doesn't go through within the timeframe, the order for Tencent could potentially have even greater ramifications for the gaming world. Tencent has many investments in US companies, and fully owns League of Legends and Valorant developer Riot Games. It also has a major stake in Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite. Furthermore, Tencent has an ownership stake in Activision Blizzard, Clash of Clan's Supercell, Ubisoft, and operates other such games as Call of Duty Mobile and PUBG Mobile. As far as ByteDance is concerned, Microsoft and its CEO Satya Nadella have been in talks with President Trump about a potential purchase, and it mentioned it would begin talks with ByteDance with hopes of "completing these discussions no later than September 15." ByteDance's order alleges that TikTok "automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users, including Internet and other network activity information such as location data and browsing and search histories. This data collection threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans' personal and proprietary information -- potentially allowing China to track the locations of Federal employees and contractors, build dossiers of personal information for blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage." Tencent's Order alleges that WeChat "automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users. This data collection threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans' personal and proprietary information. In addition, the application captures the personal and proprietary information of Chinese nationals visiting the United States, thereby allowing the Chinese Communist Party a mechanism for keeping tabs on Chinese citizens who may be enjoying the benefits of a free society for the first time in their lives." While it's hard to currently guess what will happen with these companies and apps in the US, and how this will affect the gaming industry at large, it is a big development that IGN will be following closely over the coming days. John Wick 5 Announced, Will Film Back-to-Back with Fourth Movie in Early 2021

John Wick 5 has been announced during Lionsgate's earnings call with the current plan to film back-to-back with John Wick 4 starting early 2021. Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer says both films are in the scripting stage and they hope to have John Wick 4 ready for Memorial Day weekend in 2022, according to Deadline. “We’re also busy preparing scripts for the next two installments of our John Wick action franchise, with John Wick 4 slated to hit theaters Memorial Day weekend 2022," Feltheimer said on the earnings call. "We hope to shoot both John Wick 4 and 5 back-to-back when Keanu becomes available early next year.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/05/19/john-wick-3-best-fight-scenes"] Keanu Reeves was filming the fourth Matrix movie in Germany when production was shut down in March although reports say that the actors are now back to filming. The John Wick universe continues to grow larger with The Continental TV series that's still on the way. It was announced earlier this year that the series will premiere after the fourth movie, but that was before John Wick 4 was pushed from 2021 to May 27, 2022. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-delayed-movie-due-to-coronavirus-so-far&captions=true"] It's the latest news for Reeves and his many projects. It was announced earlier today that Bill and Ted 3 was pushed up a week, but The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On the Run was recently delayed to 2021. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=temtem-ps5-screenshots&captions=true"] Temtem, the Pokemon-like MMO, is coming to PS5, after launching on Steam Early Access earlier this year. "As we look forward and as we expand our plans for the future of Temtem, we knew we had to embrace the next-gen," Temtem director Guillermo Andrades told IGN. "Sony has been very receptive and helpful with us in this decision, so the PS5 is the perfect fit to start our journey."

Hood: Outlaws and Legends Announced for PS5

UPDATE: Hood: Outlaws and Legends has since been confirmed as a multiplatform title, with a release planned on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC.

Hood: Outlaws and Legends, a third-party multiplayer game, was announced for the PS5 during Sony's State of Play event. From Focus Home Interactive and Sumo Digital Newcastle, Hood: Outlaws and Legends is a 4v4 multiplayer game focused on two warring teams in Dark Ages Britain. The gritty-looking game has a Robin Hood-esque vibe to it, centered around the two armies competing to take back stolen property and land from a corrupt authority known as the State. Gameplay footage showed a focus on stealth kills, melee and bow and arrow combat, as well as magic-usage. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=hood-outlaws-and-legends-announcement-screenshots&captions=true"] Stealing a treasure chest back from a State stronghold is your main objective in the game, but enemies - both real and of the NPC variety - will cause major roadblocks if you don't work as a team. Treasure chests are also heavy, and you can only carry so much ammo, so Hood: Outlaws and Legends is very tactics-focused. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/06/hood-outlaws-and-legends-trailer-state-of-play-2020"] Hood: Outlaws and Legends will be arriving on PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC in 2021. [poilib element="accentDivider"]

Control: AWE Expansion Release Date

Alan Wake makes his long-awaited appearance in Control for the upcoming AWE DLC arriving on August 27 for PlayStation 4. Control's second DLC, titled AWE, has been speculated to be a crossover with Remedy's previous title Alan Wake. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/06/control-awe-expansion-2-trailer-state-of-play-2020"] The mystery author was referenced multiple times in Control's supplementary collectibles, but he was briefly visible in Control's new AWE trailer. The trailer was short on details, but Control has been building out a mystery through post-launch content that could be coming to a head soon. Control is Remedy Entertainment's latest mystery adventure game starring Jesse Faden as she uncovers the mystery behind the Federal Bureau of Control and its headquarters The Oldest House. Alan Wake was the protagonist of Remedy's previous mystery adventure of the same name. Wake is a mystery novelist who discovers a supernatural takeover of a small town called Bright Falls. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=control-awe-dlc-screenshot&captions=true"] He hasn't been seen since the events of Alan Wake's American Nightmare, though materials found in Control suggested that the events of Alan Wake and Control are set in the same universe. Control was awarded IGN's Game of the Year 2019 thanks to its intriguing universe, creative combat, and compelling mystery. Temtem, the Pokemon-like MMO, Announced for PS5

Temtem, the online-MMO creature collector is coming to PlayStation 5 as revealed during the Sony State of Play event. Tetem is an online multiplayer, action-adventure game where players travel the world and collect monsters. It’s been popularly described as a Pokemon-like MMO. Following a successful launch earlier this year, the developers are looking forward to bringing the MMO to the next-gen PS5. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=temtem-ps5-screenshots&captions=true"] “As we look forward and as we expand our plans for the future of Temtem, we knew we had to embrace the next-gen. Sony has been very receptive and helpful with us in this decision, so the PS5 is the perfect fit to start our journey,” Temtem director Guillermo Andrades said in an interview with IGN. The footage of Temtem shown at the State of Play was captured on 4K at 60FPS on the PS5, Andrades confirmed. But he didn’t reveal plans to support other features like ray tracing as “Temtem’s cartoon-like renderings don’t really benefit from it, but we’re definitely looking at maxing all we can in terms of resolution and framerate.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/05/01/temtem-official-teaser-trailer"] Check out IGN for more news from today’s Sony State of Play, including the latest reveals, trailers, and more.
