New Mass Effect Revealed

A new Mass Effect was officially revealed during The Game Awards. The project is currently in "early production," according to BioWare. The reveal provided little information about what can be expected from Mass Effect's next chapter, though the teaser trailer ended on a shot of an asari who may be Liara. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/mass-effect-new-installment-announcement-trailer"] BioWare previously confirmed a "veteran team" was working on the next Mass Effect, though this is the first we've seen of it beyond concept art. The series' latest entry, Mass Effect Andromeda, was released in 2017 and is widely considered the weakest Mass Effect. IGN's review said Andromeda "only occasionally recaptures the series' brilliance, but delivers a vast and fun action-RPG." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=mass-effect-next-chapter-game-award-trailer-screenshots&captions=true"] Ahead of the next Mass Effect, BioWare and EA will release Mass Effect Legendary Edition in Spring 2021 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The long-rumored remastered collection of Mass Effect 1-3 was confirmed last month on N7 Day. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jordan is a freelance writer for IGN.

Among Us Reveals New Map, The Airship

Among Us has fully revealed its new airship-themed map called...The Airship. Revealed at The Game Awards 2020, the map received a new trailer, which showed off not just the new location, but new activities for crewmates to try and complete without being horribly murdered. The new map is a massive new map with multiple floors, contraptions, jobs, and more. Oh also Geoff Keighley's face will be a mask for Among Us. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=among-us-airship-trailer&captions=true"] The map is based on the Toppat Clan Airship, from developer Innersloth's Henry Stickmin series. It caps off an incredible year for Among Us, which launched in 2018 but achieved huge success during the 2020 pandemic, even causing Innersloth to cancel a sequel in favour of adding updates like this. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has streamed the game to huge audiences on several occasions, which we've said bodes well for video games and government. It Takes Two Could Take 15 Hours to Complete

It Takes Two should take 14 or 15 hours to complete, and its creator, Josef Fares, thinks it should win a world record for the number of mechanics included in a game. The co-op only platform adventure from Hazelight got a new trailer and release date at The Game Awards and, in an interview with IGN, Fares went into more detail about how the game balances its magic-tinged story of mending a relationship, and its large number of settings and activities. Fares and Hazelight's last game, A Way Out was notable for changing how players interacted with the game throughout the story, and It Takes Two builds on that idea: "I think it's going to go to the world record with a huge amount of variation we have in the mechanics. And there are reasons to it as well." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/it-takes-two-gameplay-reveal-trailer"] "We really need to look closer on how the mechanics are connected to the story," Fares continues, "and I really, truly believe that in [other] narrative games, sometimes designers and writers are [making] two different games. We need to drop the idea of the old thing where you learn your mechanic and blah, blah, blah, you get better. That's old design rules. I don't care about them. They could function and work in another game but, in story experiences, you have to have the [game] and the narrative meld together. This is what we're trying to do. Everything the characters are seeing, or interacting with, or encountering is part of the gameplay." Even in the two-minute trailer, we see multiple settings and activities, one after another, and Fares is very clear on the point that this is the feeling throughout the game - and it's been a force of will to make that happen: "The variation of the gameplay is important, both for the story but also to keep the player invested, so you feel that you don't lose interest – you're a part of it. I mean, how many games don't you feel like, 'I've done this so many times. This is enough'? [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=it-takes-two-game-awards-trailer-screenshots&captions=true"] "The designers have gone totally nuts. I push them so hard, like, 'Come on, let's do this. We can do this. Let's do this, let's do that.' And sometimes they tell me, 'Josef, this thing will take us four or five months to make and we only use it for these two minutes.' But for me it's the same argument as saying, 'Oh, we have such a cool scene in this movie. Let's reuse this exact scene over there.' No, it doesn't make sense. It would make it even less special, so we have to start letting go of old ideas on how we look at games." The upshot is that It Takes Two will seemingly be a far meatier experience than most narrative games of its kind. "It's going to be a long one," Fares tells me. "Yeah, like we're talking 14, 15 hours of unique madness [...]  I'm telling you, looking at how much content is crammed into this game is crazy." [poilib element="quoteBox" parameters="excerpt=You%20will%20be%20mindf**ked.%20I%20know%20I'm%20confident%2C%20but%20you%20play%20this%20game%20and%20tell%20me%20not%20to%20be%20confident"] Fares, as you might expect from his past interviews, is pretty enthusiastic about the project, and makes very clear that he and his studio have built something unique: "We've been working really hard with this for three years, and damn, it will be an experience. Let me tell you that. You will be mindf**ked. I know I'm confident, but you play this game and tell me not to be confident. I'm telling you, you have not experienced anything like this." It Takes Two will be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC on March 26, 2021. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Joe Skrebels is IGN's Executive Editor of News. Follow him on Twitter. Dune Director Denis Villeneuve Speaks Out Against Warner Bros. 2021 Film Slate Move

Dune director Denis Villeneuve has spoken out against Warner Bros. decision to release all of its 2021 film slate onto HBO Max the same day as their theatrical release. Villeneuve wrote out his words on Variety, and said that "with this decision, AT&T has hijacked one of the most respectable and important studios in film history." Villeneuve said that there was "absolutely no love for cinema, nor the audience here. It is all about the survival of a telecom mammoth, one that is currently bearing an astronomical debt of more than $150 billion." "With HBO Max's launch a failure thus far," Villeneuve wrote. "AT&T decided to sacrifice Warner Bros.' entire 2021 slate in a desperate attempt to grab the audience's attention." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/04/the-pros-and-cons-of-wbs-industry-shaking-move"] He explained how "filmmaking is a collaboration,' and that this decision by Warner Bros. mens that "they are no longer on the same team." Villeneuve believes that "streaming services are a positive and powerful addition to the movie and TV ecosystems," but he believe streaming alone can't "sustain the film industry as we knew it before COVID." While streaming services can produce great content, Villeneuve says it can't produce "movies of Dune's scope and scale." He also believes that Dune won't have the chance to perform financially in order to be viable and that piracy will be a consequence of this decision. Furthermore, he says that this move "have just killed the Dune franchise." Villeneuve agrees that public safety comes first and that he understood and supported the decision to delay Dune by over a year. The new plan was to release Dune in October 2021 when "vaccinations will be advanced and, hopefully, the virus behind us. Science tells us that everything should be back to a new normal next fall." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=everything-coming-to-hbo-max&captions=true"] Dune, according to Villeneuve, is the best movie he has ever made and was designed specifically for theaters. He also does "strongly believe that the future of cinema will be on the big screen, no matter what any Wall Street dilettante says." He continues by saying that film is an art form that "brings people together, celebrating humanity, enhancing our empathy for one another — it’s one of the very last artistic, in-person collective experiences we share as human beings." "So, just as I have both a fiduciary and creative responsibility to fulfill as the filmmaker, I call on AT&T to act swiftly with the same responsibility, respect and regard to protect this vital cultural medium," Villeneuve concludes. "Economic impact to stakeholders is only one aspect of corporate social responsibility. Finding ways to enhance culture is another. The moviegoing experience is like no other. In those darkened theaters films capture our history, educate us, fuel our imagination and lift and inspire our collective spirit. It is our legacy. Long live theatrical cinema!" Villeneuve's comments follows those by Christopher Nolan, who called HBO Max "the worst streaming service" in response to Warner Bros. 2021 film slate move. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/09/dune-official-trailer"] Wonder Woman 1984 will be the first of these films to premiere day and date in theaters and on HBO Max on December 25, 2020. Other films impacted include The Matrix 4 and Mortal Kombat. For more, check out the pros and cons to Warner Bros’ HBO Max streaming deal and everything coming to HBO Max. A Way Out Creator’s It Takes Two Gets March Release Date

It Takes Two - the new game from Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and A Way Out creator Josef Fares - will be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC on March 26, 2021. Announced at The Game Awards, the co-op only platformer will follow A Way Out's lead by offering a Friend's Pass system – only one player needs to own the game, and can invite a friend to play online for free. Friend's Passes will work within console families, but seemingly won't be cross-platform. The game can also be played in local co-op mode. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/11/it-takes-two-gameplay-reveal-trailer"] A gameplay trailer showed off the new Hazelight game, which will be published as an EA Original. While clearly taking cues from the narrative-led, splitscreen action of A Way Out, It Takes Two is a far more bizarre proposition, with married couple Cody and May turned into dolls, and told to fix their relationship to break the spell. Oh, and there's a talking book of love called Dr. Hakim. The gameplay shows off a variety of worlds, including fantasy, underwater, ice, cosmic, clockwork and even what seems to be the real world at miniature size. Within them, we see a huge variety of activities, from controlling retro video games, to controlling a pirate ship, bobsledding and what seem to be classic 3D platformer boss battles. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=it-takes-two-game-awards-trailer-screenshots&captions=true"] It Takes Two was announced at EA Play Live earlier this year, with Fares saying that it would "blow your f**king mind away". We awarded his last game, A Way Out, an 8.3 review, saying that "If you go into A Way Out thinking its mandatory two-player co-op is a gimmick, you’ll likely come out of it realizing that it couldn’t have been done any other way."
