Tom Holland Calls Next Spider-Man ‘Most Ambitious Standalone Superhero Movie Ever Made”

Actor Tom Holland says that the currently untitled third Spider-Man MCU film is “the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made” in an interview with Variety.

"I can say that it’s the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made,” Holland said on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “You sit down, read the script, and see what they’re trying to do, and they’re succeeding. It’s really impressive. I’ve never seen a standalone superhero movie quite like it. And I’m just, you know... that lucky little shit who happens to be Spider-Man in it. We got a lot more shooting to do. We started before Christmas and shot for like seven weeks. We stopped for the Christmas break, and then we’re starting again. I’m just as excited as everyone else to see it, let alone be a part of it."

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/10/is-spider-man-3-also-adding-daredevil"]

Holland’s comment would seem to bolster theories that Spider-Man 3 is whipping up some sort of multi-verse (Spider-verse?) storyline featuring actors from different film incarnations of the franchise. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, the previous two Spider-Man actors, are expected to appear, although Disney and Marvel have declined to confirm the rumors of their casting. The sequel is also confirmed to star Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch, with Alfred Molina reprising his Spider-Man 2 (2004) role as Doctor Octopus, and Jamie Foxx returning as Electro (from Amazing Spider-Man 2).

Captain America’s Chris Evans and Daredevil’s Charlie Cox are also rumored to have joined the Spider-Man 3 cast, but that news remains a rumor for now, with Evans saying it’s “news to me.”

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=%20Standalone%20Superhero%20Movie%20Ever%20Made&captions=true"]

Holland says that filming for Spider-Man 3 took a break over the winter holidays, but will resume in the near future.

Hero Collector Brings the Weapons of the MCU to Your Home

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is home to some of the coolest weapons in movie history - Iron Man's armor, Captain America's shield and the Infinity Gauntlet, just to name a few. Now MCU fans can bring these powerful artifacts home thanks to a new series of scale-model collectibles called the Marvel Museum Collection. Each of these pieces ranges from 6 to 8 inches tall and features an accurate recreation of a different weapon or mask from an MCU movie, complete with a decorative display base. The first Marvel Museum Collection wave will consist of four collectibles - the Iron Man Mark VII helmet, Cap's shield, Black Panther's helmet and Thor's hammer Mjolnir. Get a closer look at all four pieces in the slideshow gallery below: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=marvel-museum-collection-exclusive-preview&captions=true"] The Marvel Museum Collection is produced by Hero Collector, an imprint of the UK-based Eaglemoss that focuses on genre properties like Marvel. While Eaglemoss generally offers figurines and collectibles through subscription services or through specialty retailers, the company is taking more of a mass-market approach to this series. All for Marvel pieces will be sold in Walmart stores beginning in May 2021, before debuting through other retailers and on the Eaglemoss website. Naturally, this first wave barely scratches the surface of the iconic weapons and costumes in the MCU. With any luck, we'll see Hero Collector tackle everything from the Infinity Gauntlet to Star-Lord's helmet to the Eye of Agamotto in future waves. Let us know what MCU weapons you'd like to own in the comments below. EVE Online Breaks Its Own Guinness World Record for the Costliest Video Game Battle in History

EVE Online, the popular spacefaring MMO, just witnessed its biggest and most costly battle in the game’s history, setting a Guinness World Record in the process. “The Massacre at M2-XFE” cost two of EVE Online’s biggest factions an estimated total of $378,012. The battle was part of an ongoing universe-spanning war that's cost $700,000 in total.

On December 31, 2020, 5,000 players EVE’s PAPI and Imperium factions collided in the game’s M2-XFE region near a “Keepstar” (a sort of extra large space station) when PAPI forces began firing upon docked Imperium ships. Earlier in the day, a lone Imperium pilot managed to disable a “cyno jammer,” allowing the Imperium to bring in additional reinforcements.

50783830601_64b5bed9f8_k

The ensuing battle lasted approximately 14 hours, with both factions losing supercapital ships (the largest kind in-game, roughly the size of seven Empire State buildings) at a relatively equal rate. Fighting only ceased when EVE was scheduled to go offline for downtime maintenance.

Of the 1,304 Titan ships that participated in the battle, a whopping 257 of them were destroyed. PAPI forces lost a combined 130 Titans while the Imperium lost 122. Among all classes of ships, PAPI lost a total of 1,810 ships while the Imperium lost 1,596.

50783823041_9cd9927a43_k

"This battle is a bit like a poker game where both players stockpiled weapons for several years and then went all-in,” said PAPI member Gobbins. “One side started escalating the fight to the absolute maximum of their resources, and the other matched in full; not just in terms of manpower but also in the value of assets committed. It is rare in EVE to see so much at stake in a single fight as the losses can undo years of effort from thousands of participating players. However, in this rare instance it did indeed happen, causing the biggest fight we have ever seen, both for the numbers of players involved and the amount of assets destroyed. Really remarkable."

To commemorate the event (and the associated damage), an official monument bearing the names of all players involved in the battle is being constructed by developer CCP.

render_02

The estimated total of damages in $USD is based on how much in-game currency (called PLEX) it would cost to replace each ship. Much of the ships however are the result of thousands of man-hours grinding for resources. The most expensive ship destroyed during the battle, Grencia Mars’ Vanquisher cost an estimated $5,500 equivalent in $USD.

Despite the digital bloodshed, the Massacre at M2-XFE is just one battle amidst EVE Online’s ongoing “World War Bee 2,” the game’s third universe-spanning war. Upwards of 130,000 players are still duking it out for in-game territory.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/06/01/why-eve-online-is-unlike-any-other-game"]

Funny enough, while M2-XFE is certainly the most costly battle in EVE history, this is technically only the third-largest battle in terms of player count. EVE’s Battle of FWST-8 clocked in at 6,557 players. The previous record for most costly battle in USD was held by the Battle of B-R5RB, which cost players an estimated $302,000.

Activision Sued for Allegedly Stealing Call of Duty Character’s Likeness

Activision, Infinity Ward, and Major League Gaming Corp. (MLG) have all been hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit that claims the companies were responsible for  making a direct copy of a character for use in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. As reported by TorrentFreak, the plaintiff of the lawsuit, Clayton Haugen, alleges that the design of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's Mara character was stolen from Haugen's Cade Janus, a central figure in his story November Renaissance. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="1151"] Image Credit: Torrent Freak[/caption] In 2017, Haugen hired actress, cosplayer, and Twitch streamer Alex Zedra to portray Cade Janus, and he took a series of photographs of her and his story to film studios in hopes of making November Renaissance into a film. The photos were also posted on Instagram and in a series of calendars. While developing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, these companies hired Alex Zedra to help create a "strong, skilled female fighter" for the game. Furthermore, Haugen claims they also asked her to obtain the same clothing and gear used in the Cade Janus photoshoot. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="891"] Image Credit: Torrent Freak[/caption] The same makeup artist for the Cade Janus shoots was also hired and was instructed to not only recreate the look, but even use "the same hair extension piece." Haugen also claims the original photographs were posted to "the wall of the studio" and "were used as a framing guide before the model was 3D scanned." “To conceal their planned infringement of Haugen’s Cade Janus Photographs and his Cade Janus character, Defendants required the talent and the makeup professional to sign Non-Disclosure Agreements,” the complaint notes. "The resulting photographs were intended to be, and were, copies of Haugen’s Cade Janus Photographs." Not only were the resulting photographs and 3D images used to develop the character known as Mara, they were also "deployed as key assets in Modern Warfare's marketing campaign." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/03/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-official-season-one-trailer"] “Haugen is entitled to recover all monetary remedies from Defendants’ infringement, including all of their profits attributable to their infringements, to the full extent permitted by 17 U.S.C. § 504,” the complaint concludes, demanding a trial by jury. The teams at Fandom Tabletop and Wonderstorm Studio have announced a public playtest for the Tales of Xadia tabletop RPG starting on February 9, 2021. Amazon’s New CEO Commits to Making More Games After Reported Internal Struggles

Amazon's incumbent CEO Andy Jassy has pledged his support to the company's gaming division following reported internal struggles at Amazon Game Studios. In an email seen by Bloomberg, Jassy acknowledged the difficulties faced so far, which have seen games like Crucible being shut down only months after its official launch. "Some businesses take off in the first year, and others take many years,” Jassy said in an email to staff. “Though we haven’t consistently succeeded yet in AGS, I believe we will if we hang in there.” Jassy is set to replace Amazon's CEO and founder Jeff Bezos later this year after Bezos announced that he was stepping down on Tuesday. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/27/crucible-review"] Jassy's supportive email was apparently a follow-up to an email from Mike Frazzini, the current head of Amazon Game Studios. Frazzini was addressing a recent Bloomberg report which illuminated behind-the-scenes issues at the studio. Bloomberg's report alleged a 'Bro Culture' at AGS and alluded to multiple cancelled projects, mismanagement and a difficult-to-work-with game engine in Amazon Lumberyard, which apparently caused difficulties during development. In the emails obtained by Bloomberg, Frazzini is reported as saying that the studio "has zero tolerance for [the kind of behaviour described], or anything less than a fully equitable and inclusive environment [...] We’ve learned and improved a lot along the way, myself included, and we will continue to do so," Frazzini continued. "Making great games is hard, and we’re not going to get everything right.” Amazon has not had a lot of success in the gaming space so far, but Jassy and Frazzini's comments suggest they don't seem to be giving up just yet. The company announced its foray into cloud streaming in 2020 with Amazon Luna. Here's everything we know about Amazon Luna as the service sits in beta. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jordan Oloman is a freelance writer for IGN. Follow him on Twitter.
