A ’90s Daredevil Show Was Cancelled In Favour of a Doomed DC Series

We could have had a Daredevil TV series in the early '90s, but an ill-fated adaptation of a competing DC show saw plans cancelled for a series starring the Man Without Fear. In the latest IGN Inside Stories documentary, The Incredible MCU That Time Forgot, actor Rex Smith reveals that NBC had TV plans for Marvel's Daredevil, before a CBS adaptation of The Flash show saw them abruptly abandoned. Smith played Matt Murdock in 1989's The Trial of the Incredible Hulk, which left a set-up for a Daredevil show when arch-enemy Wilson Fisk (played by Indiana Jones' John Rhys-Davies) escapes before the conclusion. Smith told IGN that the set-up was intentional, but ultimately never paid off. "It was not just a guest star thing for film. This whole effort was a springboard for a series for the Daredevil," he explains. [caption id="attachment_2500525" align="alignnone" width="1280"]Rex Smith as Daredevil in The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989). Rex Smith as Daredevil in The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989).[/caption] Trial of the Incredible Hulk screenwriter Gerald Di Pego confirmed that for us: "The whole reason to do [the 1980s Hulk] movies was not just to show the Hulk again, but to bring in the other universe characters. So if you're going to bring in Daredevil and Kingpin, you're certainly not going to put them in jail or kill them off." While the project never moved far enough along to see a truly set storyline, Smith told us that John Rhys-Davies was also signed up for the TV project, to reprise his role as Wilson Fisk. "We were so excited, John and I both," he explained. "He was signed on for the series too, to be my Moriarty for Sherlock Holmes. There'd be other baddies, but the real baddie that always had his hand in it was going to be John." Unfortunately, the show never made it out of the gate due to the CBS network's interest in a competing DC project, a 1990 series about The Flash. "I hear from my agent," says Smith, "He goes, 'We have a problem.' I go, 'What kind of problem?' He goes, 'Well, [CBS] bought your contract for Daredevil, because they're coming out with The Flash and they don't want the competition. So NBC sold your contract.'" That contract sale saw the Daredevil show put on ice, and Smith was essentially paid not to play Daredevil, so that The Flash could succeed – although that series would only see a single season before being cancelled itself. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/18/the-incredible-mcu-that-time-forgot-ign-inside-stories"]

"They wanted to have the only superhero show," Smith continues. "So Flash got it and Daredevil got buried. But what a strange twist of events, isn't it? [...] I'm glad to be able to let people know. And also let them know that, this thing, every intent of it was to bring to television the Daredevil. And we'll never know how that could have gone."

Of course, we would eventually see Daredevil emerge as a 3-season Netflix streaming series – which itself would see a sudden end after the emergence of Disney+. The TV rights for the character now lie with Marvel Studios, but we've heard nothing about a revival for the character from Disney, with fans petitioning to allow Netflix series star Charlie Cox to return to the role. There's much more to learn about Marvel's early on-screen projects in The Incredible MCU That Time Forgot, which includes major players from the '80s Hulk projects that introduced Thor, Daredevil, Stan Lee cameos and more to the TV-watching world. And if that's not enough for you, check out our other superhero documentaries, Batman: Year One - The R-Rated Reboot That Almost Was, and Batman Beyond: The Classic That Nobody Wanted. Immortals Fenyx Rising – The Lost Gods DLC Release Date Announced

Ubisoft has revealed that Immortals Fenyx Rising - The Lost Gods DLC will be released on April 22, 2021. Immortals Fenyx Rising - The Lost Gods DLC is the final expansion in the game's Season Pass and features a new hero named Ash, who was chosen by Fenyx to bring back the lost gods. This new chapter will also feature top-down gameplay and all-new brawler combat, which will be a departure from Immortal Fenyx Rising's third-person camera view. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/17/immortals-fenyx-rising-post-launch-and-season-pass-trailer"] Ash must travel to the Pyrite Island to reunite these lost gods, which include Poseidon and Hades, who all left Olympus after a falling out with Zeus. More details about The Lost Gods DLC will be released closer to its release date, but fans can start a primer quest right now in the northeast of the main game's Golden Isle. This will provide a preview of the challenge to come and rewards that can be carried over to the DLC. Immortals Fenyx Rising's second DLC - Myths of the Eastern Realm - featured both a new protagonist and a new location, but it didn't quite live up to its promise in our mind. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/26/immortals-fenyx-rising-myths-of-the-eastern-realm-dlc-review"] In our review of Immortals Fenyx Rising - Myths of the Eastern Realm DLC, we said that "its lack of ambition and inability to distinguish itself from the base game’s adventure is a bit of a letdown, really. Attractive as the Chinese-themed reskin may be, just underneath is combat, exploration, and puzzle solving that is functionally nearly identical to what we’ve already played, and the characters aren’t nearly as much fun." Legends of Tomorrow’s Dominic Purcell Leaves Show

Update (4/17/21) - Dominic Purcell deleted his previous Instagram post and shared a new one, saying he has no "beef with the studio at @warnerbrostv." Furthermore, even though he will no longer be a series regular, he will return "periodically."
AND NO BODY HAS FORCED ME TO MAKE THIS STATEMENT....God would everyone chill the fuck out. Why are people losing their mind because I’m leaving the show. Yes my tone was heavy straight to the point. I use cus words cause I do and I’m Australian It’s who I am. Do I have a beef with the studio at @warnerbrostv NO!.......Yes I said they don’t care. That’s not correct of course they do— just me being emotional and over stuff. We work we all work in a big machine. Sometimes shit happens. It’s life. ........ here are the facts. I am leaving @cw_legendsoftomorrow on a full time basis. I will come back periodically with a handshake deal with my boss Phil Klemmer. I have and always have had a tremendous relationship with the Bosses and the studio @warnerbrostv Peter Roth and I had a tremendous working relationship I was super sad when he retired. My wording was aggressive in tone because sometimes I get frustrated and annoyed it’s been a long long heavy year locked up in #Vancouver for 9 months without going home. Who doesn’t and who hasn’t lashed out. Im fuckin human. So for god sake chill on. “Dominic Purcell and the studio are beefing” total bullshit. It’s simply not true the press always turn shit into what it’s not. I haven’t quit. My contract is up. 6 years not 7. I’ve never quit on a contract and never would. So to all the fans you will see me again next year on season 7 periodically. I hope this has clarified stuff. I must admit I was freaked the fuck out on how much press I got or this got world wide. But hey @cw_legendsoftomorrow hasn’t ever got as much press ever stoked!!
Original story follows. [poilib element="accentDivider"] DC's Legends of Tomorrow star Dominc Purcell has taken to Instagram to not only announce his departure from the show, but to also reveal his frustration with the studio behind it. Despite Legends of Tomorrow already receiving a greenlight for season 7, Purcell confirmed that no deal has been done to secure his return, and that no matter how much "cash they throw on the corporate level," he is walking away from the show he's been on since the beginning. "Deal isn’t done. I have no interest," Purcell wrote on Instagram. "What ever cash they throw on the corporate level. Im walking away from @cw_legendsoftomorrow. It’s been a total pleasure and a humbling experience bringing @dccomics iconic character #heatwave (aka) MICK RORY to life. I smashed this character— not an actor in the world could have done better. FACT.... Such a funny c*** ........Time to move on and see how shit unfolds. @caitylotz @nickzano look after the kids coming through. They need education. They are a number— teach them to not rely on loyalty from the studio. The studio does not care. The actors work ethic and talent must give them the confidence to question authority. ....Much love to all. It’s not lost on me how very fortunate I am. .....ACTORS HIT ME UP ON DM." Purcell played Mick Rory/Heat Wave on Legends of Tomorrow, and even starred alongside his Prison Break co-star Wentworth Miller for part of the show. Purcell first took up the role as Heat Wave in The Flash before joining as a series regular in Legends of Tomorrow and appearing in the Arrowverse's Supergirl, Arrow, Batwoman, and Crisis on Infinite Earths. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-best-superhero-movies-and-tv-shows-on-netflix-right-now&captions=true"] Legends of Tomorrow's sixth season is set to premiere on May 2, 2021, and much of the promotional material still features Purcell's Heat Wave. Amazon Cancels Its Lord of the Rings MMORPG

Amazon has canceled its Lord of the Rings MMORPG that was first announced in 2019. As reported by Bloomberg, the game was in development at Amazon Games Studios alongside China-based Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd, which was purchased by Tencent Holdings Ltd. in December 2020. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/07/10/new-lord-of-the-rings-mmo-in-development-from-amazon-ign-news"] The contract negotiations between Amazon and Tencent were said to have caused a dispute that eventually led to the game's cancellation. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that, following Tencent's acquisition of Leyou, it had "been unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time." The team will be shifted to other projects, and Amazon shared its disappointment in not being able to bring this project to the world. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/03/new-world-hands-on-with-amazons-open-world-mmorpg"] “We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers," a spokesperson for Amazon said. This joins Breakaway and Crucible as yet another cancelled project for Amazon Game Studios, which itself was the subject of another Bloomberg report that detailed the dysfunction and struggles the studio has been dealing with. Amazon still has one MMORPG in the works called New World, although that project has been hit with delays and is now scheduled for release in August 2021. For fans disappointed by the news of this cancellation, Turbine's The Lord of the Rings Online is still active, and we still have Amazon Prime's The Lord of the Rings Series and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum video game to look forward to. Lord of the Rings Actors Reveal the Origin of One of Its Most Infamous Memes

From the now 14-year-old remix of "They're taking the hobbits to Isengard" to the more recent resurgence of Bilbo's "After all, why not? Why shouldn't I keep it?", Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy has proved a veritable fountain of meme fodder for as long as many people have been online. Still, one line of dialogue endures as one of the more inexplicable yet endearing moments in the series. In a scene in The Two Towers, a fight between the Orcs and Uruk-hai breaks out over the prospect of eating the hobbits, Pippin and Merry. The scene climaxes with an Uruk-hai bellowing "Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!" before a bunch more start chowing down on an Orc. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2014/12/22/ranking-peter-jacksons-lord-of-the-rings-and-hobbit-movies"] In an interview with Thrillist, Lord of the Rings actor Stephen Ure explained the origin of the line and expressed his own bafflement about what it implies about Middle Earth's cuisine and restaurant business. Ure portrayed several Orcs across the three films, most notably the Orc captain Grishnákh. "There's a lot of stuff that doesn't really make sense. Of course, they wouldn't know what a menu was," Ure said. "You're not going to start debating the writing, because maybe then they are going to run away and rewrite it, and then you are going to be sitting there in all that stuff. Really, at the end of the day, you just want it to be over and get out of that stuff. I had no idea that this scene had become so famous. There's a lot of clunky things in there." Ure continued by speculating that the line was written by screenwriter Philippa Boyens, who worked on all three Lord of the Rings films and received shared writing credit with Fran Walsh, Stephen Sinclair, and Jackson on The Two Towers. "She puts all this stuff in there that doesn't make sense," Ure said. "She was taken on board because she was the Tolkien expert. I can tell the lines that Philippa wrote. Like in the third film where I'm playing Gorbag, and when I finally come up from the big Orc fight that starts over the Mithril vest, and I'm going to kill Elijah [Wood as Frodo], and say, 'I'm going to bleed you like a stuck pig.'" [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=amazons-the-lord-of-the-rings-every-confirmed-actor%20&captions=true"] The interview goes into further detail on the performances and filming of the scene, with additional quotes from Ure, as well as fellow actors Jed Brophy and Nathaniel Lees, who portrayed Snaga and Ugluk respectively. In other Lord of the Rings news, a new edition of JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings novel is set to release on October 19 and will include new illustrations by Tolkien. Meanwhile, Nacon's Gollum-focused adventure video game has been delayed to 2022. Additionally, Amazon is currently in production on a new television series set in Middle Earth. The story will take place thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. [poilib element="accentDivider"] J. Kim Murphy is a freelance entertainment writer.
