“It’s especially exciting to be able to introduce him in the era of the High Republic,” Older tells StarWars.com. “The High Republic Yoda is a journeyman out in the galaxy.” Even though he may be exploring the galaxy more, it doesn't mean he won't take time to help others along the way.
“While he’s already a respected member of the Jedi Council at this point, we meet Yoda in IDW’s The High Republic Adventures series doing what he loves best: looking out for the young folks — in this case, a group of Padawans traveling around the galaxy to learn the ways of the Jedi with a hands-on approach,” Older says. “The Force study abroad program, basically.”
Considering Yoda will be appearing in a comic, his looks had to be updated to reflect his younger self, and that proved to be an exciting challenge for those involved.
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/27/star-wars-the-high-republic-explained"]
“The goal was to update Yoda, but to be careful and be true to the Yoda that we all know and love,” says Troy Alders, Lucasfilm art director. “Also, to really make sure that the new look was believable, as this is really the first time that there has been an opportunity to update his look and his clothing. It felt like a daunting and enormous responsibility to embark on and get right.”
Yoda will be around 700 years old, meaning he is about 200 years younger than what he was in the Skywalker Saga, so he isn't THAT much younger, relatively speaking, but the team "thought that with it being hundreds of years earlier, he would definitely have a different outfit, maybe even more than one."
His hair and face only appear slightly younger in these new adventures, and will mostly resemble what he looked like in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. To ensure consistency, Alders made sure to involve concept artist Iain McCaig, who was instrumental in the design of the prequel trilogy.
In the concept images you can see below, Yoda's temple attire is from this "special time of the golden age of the Jedi." There is an "elegance" to it, says Alders.
His mission outfit features tonal markings on the robe that are inspired by the Jedi Temple architectural details. He is also adorned with the previously established High Republic-era lightsaber holster, more layered tunics, and cloaks reflecting the era.
Star Wars: The High Republic is a new initiative featuring inter-connected adult and young adult novels, children's books, and comics that will explore this new era that takes place 200 years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Star Wars: The High Republic was delayed from August 2020 to January 2021.

Author Liu Cixin said of the project: "I have the greatest respect for and faith in the creative team adapting The Three-Body Problem for television audiences. I set out to tell a story that transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures and races; one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole. It is a great honor as an author to see this unique sci-fi concept travel and gain fandom across the globe and I am excited for new and existing fans all over the world to discover the story on Netflix.”
"Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe," said writers and exec producers Benioff and Weiss in a statement. "We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world.” “It’s a privilege to be adapting one of the great masterpieces of Chinese science-fiction," added Woo. "The Three-Body Problem trilogy combines so many things I love: rich, multi-layered characters and true existential stakes - all told as an elegant and deeply human allegory. I’m thrilled to kick off my partnership with Netflix with this accomplished creative team.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=netflix-spotlight-september-2020&captions=true"] Bernadette Caulfield rounds out the creative team as an executive producer, together with Nena Rodrigue, T-Street's President of Television, Lin Qi, Chairman of the rights-holders, and Zhao Jilong, Vice President of The Three-Body Universe.
