Discworld: Terry Pratchett’s Production Company to Make ‘Authentic’ Adaptations

Sir Terry Pratchett's Narrativia is looking to expand the Discworld universe with a new series of "truly authentic" screen adaptations after striking a development deal with Endeavor Content and Motive Pictures. Narrativia, the production company launched by Pratchett in 2012, recently announced the exclusive partnership, which will bring the treasured world of the Discworld fantasy novel series to screens in the form of "prestige adaptations that remain absolutely faithful" to Pratchett's original, unique genius. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/05/31/amazons-good-omens-miniseries-review"] Discworld spans a beloved series of novels that have sold in excess of 100 million copies globally, and the adaptations are said to be forged from a shared love of the original source material, as well as a mutual commitment towards creating an epic series. "Discworld teems with unique characters, witty narrative and incredible literary tropes, and we feel these should be realized on screen in a form that my father would be proud of," said Rhianna Pratchett, co-director of Narrativia. "It's wonderful to embark on this journey with Motive and Endeavor Content, who both perfectly share our vision to make this a reality." All 41 of the Discworld novels take place on a flat, circular world that balances on the back of four elephants, which stand on the back of a giant star turtle, however, each individual story explores a multitude of human issues. It is not yet known which Discworld novels are set for adaptation under the landmark new partnership. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/06/05/good-omens-cast-respond-to-ign-comments"] Rob Wilkins, managing director of Narrativia, said of the development: "The Discworld books are a huge source of joy to millions of readers, and rightly so; every paragraph, phrase and footnote was crafted with brilliance and flair and we are committed to bringing Terry's world to the screen with the respect and care it deserves. With this partnership, we are delighted to say that Discworld has finally found its home." Simon Maxwell, CEO of Motive Pictures, added: "Discworld is a national treasure and we are thrilled to be forging this new partnership with Narrativia and Endeavor Content. Together we will produce shows that will be loved by millions of Discworld fans worldwide, whilst also opening up Sir Terry Pratchett’s epic creations and legacy to new audiences. We launched Motive to make high quality British shows with global scale and impact and I can think of nothing that exemplifies that ambition more than this hugely exciting partnership." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=10-best-tv-shows-you-probably-didnt-watch-in-2019&captions=true"] This comes shortly after BBC America ordered The Watch, a multi-part TV series based on the City Watch subset of novels in the Discworld series. Last year, the Good Omens novel, written by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, was made into a miniseries by BBC Studios and Amazon Studios. The upcoming series of adaptations are expected to kick off with some of the most iconic titles in Sir Terry's fiercely incisive and satirical universe. Joker: Comic Book Icon Jim Lee Renders Batman’s Nemesis for Charity

The comic book industry has been hit especially hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, with many stores shutting down and Marvel and DC's distributor halting shipments of new books. DC's Publisher Jim Lee is one of many comic creators doing what they can to help struggling stores, and he gave IGN an exclusive look at his latest charity sketch art. Lee is currently in the midst of an ambitious charitable effort, drawing one sketch every day for 60 days in a row, each featuring a different DC character. Today's creation features the Clown Prince of Crime himself. Check out the incredible Joker artwork below: unnamed And if you want to take a peek at the past 25 days' worth of amazing DC sketches, we've put together a gallery of all Lee's sketches so far: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=superstar-artist-jim-lee-sketches-the-dc-universe&captions=true"] You can head over to eBay if you want to bid on this or other upcoming sketches. Each auction remains open for three days, and the winner of each auction is allowed to choose the next character Lee draws. All proceeds from these auctions are being donated to the Comic Book United Fund, which is managed by the Book Industry Charitable Foundation and aimed at providing financial relief to comic book retailers struggling to stay afloat during the pandemic. According to DC, Lee's sketches alone have already raised over $200,000 for the CBUF, and combined with other charitable auctions from creators like Art Adams, Ivan Reis, Sam Keith and J. Scott Campbell, the total raised is over $300,000. Additionally, DC has pledged $250,000 to the charity. This isn't the first outreach effort Lee has helped spearhead at DC. Last year Lee was among a group of DC employees who traveled to Kuwait, and he taught US troops how to draw Batman. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/04/27/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-the-last-ronin-miniseries-announced"] It remains to be seen how much lasting impact the pandemic will have on the industry. Some comics pros have suggested a new Marvel vs. DC crossover may be just the thing to lure readers back into shops. But even if that project doesn't materialize, there are plenty of great comics to look forward to in 2020. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jesse is a mild-mannered staff writer for IGN. Endgame: Russos Share Cap and Tony’s Last Days on Set, Captain Marvel’s First

In honor of the blockbuster's one year anniversary, directors Joe and Anthony Russo did a tweet-along of Avengers: Endgame on Monday as part of ComicBook.com's Quarantine Watch Party. While the filmmakers didn't reveal much in the way of news -- honestly, what more can they say about the Marvel epic that they haven't already said? -- they did post a series of sweet behind-the-scenes photos and brief videos showcasing the cast and locations. Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely also tweeted along, while none other than Tony Stark himself, actor Robert Downey Jr., joined Joe Russo on his Instagram Live segment. Check out the highlights of their Endgame behind-the-scenes posts and anecdotes below, from Brie Larson's first day ever playing Captain Marvel to Chris Evans' last day playing Captain America and Robert Downey Jr. after filming Tony's "I am Iron Man" snap: The Russos also revealed some tidbits about Cap throughout the tweet-along: The filmmakers posted several on-location photos and videos of scenes featuring Thor and Rocket's visit to Asgard to Ant-Man, Hulk, Cap, and Iron Man in New York: The Russos also paid tribute to the late Stan Lee, who shot a cameo as a hippie during the film's 1970 time heist sequence, as well as to Robert Redford, who reprised his Winter Soldier role as SHIELD's Alexander Pierce: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=10-best-moments-from-avengers-endgame&captions=true"] For more Endgame nostalgia, look back at these deleted scenes from the film and check out these sweet vinyl soundtracks from Mondo. Sakura Wars Review – All The World’s A Stage

Sakura Wars is perhaps the most anime game that I've ever played. There are plenty of games out there based on popular anime, yes, but when it comes to feeling like you're an active part of an ongoing, episodic adventure filled with quirky characters, dramatic action, and satisfying melodrama, Sakura Wars has everything else beat. Its structure, charming cast, and whirlwind story help set it apart from other colorful anime-inspired adventures, and, much like the characters whose stories it tells, it manages to overcome many of its flaws to become a satisfying experience in the end.

For the uninitiated, the entire concept of Sakura Wars is rather offbeat. This particular game is a semi-reboot of a long-running Japanese game series of the same name, set in an alternate 1940s Japan where steam technology quickly surpassed electricity and history took a very different path. The world's nations, rather than fighting each other in World Wars, took arms against demonic invaders with armies of steam-powered fighting robots called Spiricle Strikers. Oh yes, and these armies also operate semi-covertly as theatre troupes whose members consisted mostly of young women.

It's a lot to take in, and it's compounded by the fact that only one other Sakura Wars game has made the voyage Westward, though some related media (like anime and manga adaptations) have seen release here. Still, if you're coming in totally blind to the Sakura Wars concept and mythos, you might find yourself rather confused, particularly when references to previous titles crop up.

Tarantino Reveals the Fate and Backstory of Pulp Fiction’s Gimp

Writer-director Quentin Tarantino reveals in a new interview what happened to (and his own backstory for) one of Pulp Fiction's most notorious side characters, the Gimp. SPOILERS ahead for Pulp Fiction! [poilib element="accentDivider"] Dressed head-to-toe in leather bondage gear, the mute Gimp (portrayed by Steve Hibbert) is the S&M slave imprisoned in the basement of Maynard's pawn shop where a bound and gagged Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) and Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) are held captive. The Gimp is present when Maynard and security guard Zed rape Marsellus and then when Butch frees Marsellus. In a fan Q&A with Empire, Tarantino revealed his backstory for the Gimp and what happened to him after Butch left. (I think we all can imagine what "medieval" fate was in store for Zed). "It doesn’t quite play this way in the movie, but in my mind when I wrote it, the Gimp’s dead. Butch knocked him out and then when he passed out he hung himself," Tarantino revealed. The filmmaker, who won his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for 1995's Pulp Fiction, went on to dish on who the Gimp really was and why he was chosen by Maynard and Zed. "In terms of backstory, he was like a hitchhiker or somebody that they picked up seven years ago, and they trained him so he’s the perfect victim," Tarantino said. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=quentin-tarantinos-most-notable-abandoned-or-delayed-projects&captions=true"] So what do you think of Tarantino's Gimp revelations? Let us know in the comments. And for more on Quentin Tarantino, read up on that time he played an Elvis impersonator on The Golden Girls as well as what he had to say about making a Star Trek movie and a Bounty Law TV series inspired by his film Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood.

HBO Developing Hellraiser TV Series With Halloween Reboot Director

Pinhead lives! HBO is reportedly developing a new TV series based on Clive Barker's Hellraiser, which has David Gordon Green (2018's Halloween) lined up to direct several early episodes. This marks the horror franchise's first stab at the small screen, although there were efforts made to launch a TV series as far back as 2012. According to Deadline, Green will direct the pilot and several more early episodes of the Hellraiser series, which will be scripted by vets Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica, Daredevil) and Michael Dougherty (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Trick r’ Treat). "The idea is to create an elevated continuation and expansion of the well-established Hellraiser mythology. It is by no means a remake, but rather assumes the past mythology to be a given," Deadline reports. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-best-horror-movies-on-netflix&captions=true"] The series will remain centered on the demonic Cenobites and their leader, Pinhead. The Cenobites, as the site reminds us, "come from hell to harvest human souls and keep balance between good and evil." Deadline says there is a separate, unrelated Hellraiser movie still in development at Spyglass. The Hellraiser franchise, inspired by Barker's novella The Hellbound Heart, spans 10 feature films as well as many books, comics, and even an unreleased video game. [ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/02/14/hellraiser-judgment-trailer] The first Hellraiser movie debuted back in 1987 while the most recent feature entry was 2018's Hellraiser: Judgment. HBO's Hellraiser series counts Danny McBride and Roy Lee among its many executive producers.

Here at IGN, we're always looking for new ways to bring our community together to embrace what we're most passionate about. That's why we launched Watch From Home Theater, a weekly live show where we unite some of your favorite IGN personalities and special celebrity guests to have a digital movie night together with you watching some of our favorite films of all time. This Wednesday, April 29nd at 5 p.m. PT, we're watching Star Trek: First Contact with director and star Jonathan Frakes! The eighth Star Trek movie marked Frakes' feature film directorial debut, though he had previously directed multiple episodes of TNG, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. Frakes'  Star Trek directing career continued on from 1998's Star Trek: Insurrection up through the two currently ongoing Star Trek series, Discovery and the TNG-sequel Picard. Of returning to direct Picard, Frakes told IGN, "The shooting style is a little bit different. You've got to keep it cool, though. ... It's not like Next Gen where it was closeup, two shot, closeup, closeup. You know I mean. That s#!t is... That doesn't fly on television anymore!” First Contact sees Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander Riker and the crew of the USS Enterprise travel back in time to the 21st century to try to stop the Borg from conquering Earth. Considering the pivotal role the Borg play in Picard: Season 1, revisiting this movie is more timely than ever, and we are so thrilled to do it with Number One himself. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/star-trek-the-history-of-the-borg-timeline"] So grab your copy of Star Trek: First Contact and sync up with us for this one-of-a-kind movie night! Pete Davidson & Judd Apatow’s King of Staten Island to Go Straight to VOD

Universal Pictures has dropped their original plans to theatrically release The King of Staten Island, a comedy directed by Judd Apatow and starring Pete Davidson, and will debut the film digitally on June 12 instead. Universal made the announcement Monday alongside an Instagram video from Apatow and Davidson. The King of Staten Island marks the second Universal title following Trolls World Tour to pivot from theatrical to digital release due to the coronavirus pandemic. Apatow's film is a semi-autobiographical account of SNL star Davidson's early years. KSI_Adv1Sheet_RGB_3SM Universal describes The King of Staten Island as "a bracing comedy about love, loss, and laughter"; here's the following official plot synopsis:

"Scott (Davidson) has been a case of arrested development ever since his firefighter father died when he was seven. He’s now reached his mid-20s having achieved little, chasing a dream of becoming a tattoo artist that seems far out of reach. As his ambitious younger sister (Maude Apatow) heads off to college, Scott is still living with his exhausted ER nurse mother (Marisa Tomei) and spends his days smoking weed, hanging with the guys—Oscar (Ricky Velez, Master of None), Igor (Moises Arias) and Richie (Lou Wilson)—and secretly hooking up with his childhood friend Kelsey (Bel Powley). But when his mother starts dating a loudmouth firefighter named Ray (Bill Burr), it sets off a chain of events that will force Scott to grapple with his grief and take his first tentative steps toward moving forward in life."

The cast also includes Steve Buscemi as Papa, a veteran firefighter who takes Scott under his wing, and Pamela Adlon. The film was scripted by Apatow, Davidson, and former SNL writer Dave Sirus. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=new-movies-coming-to-vod-early&captions=true"] The King of Staten Island will be available in North America on premium on-demand digital everywhere beginning Friday, June 12, 2020.
